Drag those beautiful hundys over some rocks it'll be fun!

I wasn't able to secure accommodations in Silverton for that time but I will be in Ouray the 17-18th and plan on running Corkscrew, Hurricane and California passes from the Ouray side on one of those days and Yankee boy or Imogene on the other. I need to get a newer model CB or some sort of communication (I have the old style shoebox cobra). Any recommendations on where to start?

GMRS

I think the official comms for 9.2 will GMRS

I am, and always will be, a huge advocate for HAM.

There is still time to study and take the test before the end of July ;)

I am tempted. I see some of the Baofeng handheld type units can support CB (GMRS) and HAM, is that correct?

Sort of... the UV-5R hardware is capable, but it's not legal based on it's FCC Certification. How/if/when/why anyone would know the difference is up for discussion.

CB and GMRS are not the same though, CB is Amplitude Modulation while GMRS is Frequency Modulation... they don't play since they require different hardware. If you have HAM the only reason you'll use GMRS is to talk with your friends who won't get HAM. HAM is better in every way.

I can’t totally agree. I’m more a roast beef guy myself :meh:

Just going to start a separate thread for those HIHX participants still planning on going to Silverton and who might want to meet up for trail days. @ga12r1 @atnolan94 @DirtDawg @abuck99 and I will be starting our trip in Salida. I will arrive on the 17th and stay through the 21st before heading down to Silverton with the gang for the "traditional" HIH dates. Anyone is welcome to join us.

We will likely be camping in different places around Silverton. We could easily schedule meet up locations and times for people to join on the trail runs. I'm planning on running ALL of the trails this year as they should all be open (Black Bear is thawing quick and Imogene is almost entirely clear already).

In summary, this is just an informal, loose grouping of enthusiasts. When we are all in Silverton, please refrain from mentioning anything HIH/Hundreds In The Hills as this is in no way affiliated with that event, cancelled or otherwise. Chris and Stan have built up significant good will under that moniker and we don't want anything to occur that might damage that.

Don't call me loose...

Ill be there......less than 24 hrs since the thread started and there's already a comms discussion, ha! See you guys then.

I’m always willing and able to make any discussion about comms
Loose is fast, and on the edge of out of control....
You have a much more PC definition

True, but since this is not an official HIH event, and it's just a group of "random" people, that just happen to:
be driving the same model vehicle.
participate on the same internet forum.
be staying in/around the same town (in the same week in July).
have an interest in driving on the same trails (at the same time).
need to communicate/coordinate, while complying with coronapocalypse "social distancing" norms.

It seems appropriate, and probably more important than the official event.

Official HIH comms seems to favor a CB, while this random coincidence meeting, seems to lean much more strongly towards GMRS. This seems important to me, as it might influence whether a :
0 ohm resistor, might accidentally fall off my ham radio.
Kenwood TK8180 comercial radio might get installed, that is pre-programmed for GMRS.
Midland MicroMobile GMRS radio gets installed, along with an officially HIH approved/required CB, and a 2m/70cm ham radio.

I don't see this so much as a thread devolving into a comms debate, as it is assuring that the same "random" 2-way radio(s) are available, for those hard headed people, that happen to be traveling to the location of an "event", even after it has been cancelled, who just might happen to want to be able to communicate.

Our club had the com debate. Our de facto com plan is now GMRS. Most everyone has the baofung handheld, which will work on GMRS freqs. FWIW I have the mxt115 with roof antenna and can recommend it. I paid $70 for a 10-year GMRS license and so now drive unworried about spending the rest of my days in jail for violating federal communications law. I will admit I did not carefully look at how difficult it would be to get a HAM license.

CB is another story and the only experience I have with CB is Smoky and the Bandit reruns good buddy. I will get one if necessary next year, but would like to put it off. Looking forward to riding with yall, even if we need to break out the cups and string.

I have my MXT275 with 6db gain antenna mounted up and operational. I also have 4 Baofeng UV5Rs for anyone that might only have CB and wants to run trails with the bunch of us that will be on GMRS.
