We actually saw the beginnings of the fire near Antonito as we were leaving La Jara reservoir. It sounds like they got it under control quickly. It rained here all night in Jasper, which is about 20 miles away.
I can’t predict the future, but it seems to rain a lot more here in the Rio Grande National Forest, especially in July.
My 2 cents, La Jara Reservoir is huge. Lots of open areas to circle the wagons. The only fees I saw was a wilderness area pass. We could still do the Cumbres trail run and explore north into the Rio Grande forest. We have the option of moving camp as we explore further away from La Jara.

I like that option, Mark. It’s near to the original destination, which is in the vicinity of Antonito, CO.
Also presents the possibility of 55’s showing up with canoes or SUP boards strapped to the tops!šŸ˜ƒšŸ˜ŽšŸ·šŸ›¶šŸ—

Works for me if everyone’s in. Can’t find any campgrounds with enough unreserved spaces. Mavreeso Campground near Rico does have a group site available that will accommodate 40 people but doesn’t say how many vehicles. I was going to call tomorrow after the holiday rush to check but Mark’s suggestion works for me and he’s familiar with the area. Best to make a quick decision at this late date.

I believe we are still in. We have reservations at two campsites in Kansas and Oklahoma, so this location will work for us. We have to make due with what we're facing, fires and all. We have been talking about heading North instead to Minnesota and do some exploring. Like everything else the last couple years, we have to stay flexible. Hope this works for everyone.

I’m still in and looking forward to it! Location wise I am ready for anything and good with the suggestion about similar location to the original plan.

We can either start at the reservoir or try staying at Cross Creek and move camp as we explore south? Our chances might be better mid week grabbing spots there. If the majority rather stay in one spot, the reservoir is probably best.

Unfortunately I'm trailering there so one spot would be my preference.
