CO/UT trip

Messaged with Danny yesterday...the dates of your event/trip are open at his place.

Simply...he's a retired offroader. Jeep guy, but gets along with everyone. He likes moonshine, cigarattes, non-UT cheap beer and pretty girls. His home has a LARGE gravel lot with plenty of parking. Some grass for tents. The house has one room with two bunks (4 beds) and another with a double or queen. One bath. The shop is FULLY stocked with tools...everything you need but a hoist. Part of the garage holds a nice party table, fridge, and includes a full bath with shower. He can/will drink until daybreak, but has gotten smarter the the past few years. I've stayed there a total of 10-15 weeks over the past couple years, and will be by again this weekend for a night. He's been storing my Teryx4, my FZJ80 and my alum trailer since May. His place hosts 20-25 rigs and parties during EJS, including little companies like BFG, Raceline, Dynomax, etc. His shop is ALWAYS open for repairs, and he will drink beer and watch while you wrench on your junk. Simply put, you need it or break it, you replaced it...someone needed a D300 transfer case a few years back and he had one...6 weeks later a fully rebuilt D300 with 4:1 and 32-spline outputs showed up...that's the generosity he displays and he gets in return.

No drinking/driving is the only rule, party all night, wrench all night, etc.

@4xsteve has his number, if this works for you, ring him up. Let him know I referred you. He's on the S end of Moab, so BFE, Behind the Rocks, and some of those are convenient. The KOA is also close should someone prefer full hookups, but he does have a few 30A extension cords for campers.

Price? Negotiable donations...the tip jar is in the garage, wifi is free (RockCrawler.com sponsored, hence my connection). He does NOT keep much for Toyota parts, so don't hold your breath there ;) He was just finishing a mezzanine in one garage stall when I was last there, and trying to weed out his pile of stuff.

Heather and I will be in for a few days of the trip, unsure just when yet. We are still homeless, and need to be settled into something before we start any road trips. Only 4-1/2 hours from the tentative house tho, so an easy drive.

This sounds like an outstanding plan, thanks Woody.
I vote to have Steve contact him and make the reservation.

I'm good with that!

Ok guys I was informed this morning that things have been worked so I CAN make this trip, so if you will have me I'm back in. If I have to back out "not going to happen" I will cover my share of the fuel regardless.

Hells Yea! im sure roger will be very happy to have a co-driver.

Well hot diggity dog; I am off for three days and look what happens!
- Woody confirms we can utilize the most bad ass camping spot in Moab
- Jason rejoins the trip so Roger has a codriver again...
- - and I assume this fills the fourth spot once again.

So we are now GtG for the "big" part of the logistics it would seem. I know you guys will have your own logistics for the trip over, but by and large, I think most of the puzzle pieces have fallen into place quite nicely.

I will call Danny in the next few days to firm up and set some dates with him. What do you think is the best projected "hard" info?
- Arrival for me is likely Saturday night, October 3rd. East coast contingent arrival is likely what; Monday morning or afternoon, October 5th?
- Departure: NET Friday, October 16th but NLT Sunday, October 18th for me. East coasters?
- Parking: Two large rigs @ 55-75' each and three tow rig & single-car trailer sets? (one or two more not be full timers: Woody & Andy Jordan)
- 8-10 trail rigs? (Don't think any of the single vehicles will pose space issues though). Anyone flying in and driving a rental over?
- Anyone flying in that we need to account for ferrying from town or airports?
- Any other details I need to disclose to Danny???

Now that I have a co- driver we should arrive Sunday evening the 4th and I think depart Saturday the 17th.

Hmm, now I gotta figure out how I get out there. Originally I was Co driving with Rocky but he's got stops to make along the way out and back. Jason obviously takes up the other seat in Rogers rig so that might put me on a plane which ain't a bad thing necessarily.

Andy, what's your plan?

Ted
We can manage 3 people in little red, as long as we are driving straight through. Got 2 seats and a bed.

Thanks Roger. Just kicking around ideas and exploring options cause I think Andy and I are now in the same boat.

Because I don't know for sure and haven't researched it enough yet...

It looks like I/we can get a flight into Grand Junction for about the same price (+/-$350) as Salt Lake City. GJ is about 1.5 hrs fro Moab and SLC is about 4 hrs so that seams to be a pretty easy decision. Is there any particular advantage of flying into SLC over GJ that makes it worth the extra driving time?

It looks like we can rent a a car in GJ but anyone know if the car can be turned in at Moab the next day or is this a 2 week rental? Any obvious solutions other than a rental car that you guys are aware of?

Another option but a long shot probably. I could Fly into SLC and have Steve pick me/us up at the aiport but that'd be tough coordinating schedules and not to mention getting his big-rig into curb side pick up.

Check flights into Moab too...I've been told it's not ridiculously more and you save the drive time and rental hassle...ATL to DIA to Moab regional

a good thought but Nope, currently there is no commuter service into Moab. SkyWest used to but ended service in April and a new contract was awarded to Great Lakes Airlines but they haven't started up yet, at least according the to Moab Airport Facebook page.

Ted
Last time I talked to Andy ,he and Bobby were driving in Andy's car and stopping to visit with Bobby's relatives in Denver.
Talked to Spot, he said he would share the bed with you when Jason and I are in front seats.
Most of the time either Jason or I will be in the bed as we plan to drive straight through, about 30 hrs with fuel & food stops.

by no means saying I'm not gonna ride just exploring my options.

If Andy and Bobby are driving into Denver then maybe I can arrange a pickup with them somewheres along the way. Paging Andy!!

Andy Jordan inadvertently made me take another look at Billing's Canyon in GJ. It is VERY close to 21 Road and I vote to add it to the side trip. If we only have a few rigs, and no major issues, we might be able to do both in the same day. However that will be pushing the limits of vehicle capabilities and time so I think we'd need to plan to have two days. I don't think this will pose much of an issue though since the group that remains in Moab can just do some of the trails on their list that we, the bigger trucks, may not mind missing anyway.

Might want to schedule that for late in the trip so when you break your junk beyond repair you are not spending a week riding as a passenger.

I'm down for whatever. I plan to bring 2 tents, 1 for a main campground and a small one for just such a side trip.

good wisdom here.

That said, Steve apparently you didn't catch my earlier comments about spare parts. I'm going to have minimal room so would like to coordinate what you're bringing in the rolling workshop. I'll have a couple spare 4.10 diffs, drive shaft, and a couple axle shafts but not much more.

I'll have my welder, spare bolt collection, front end bearings and seals, birfs that are common to most of us and then spares specific to my truck. It's not just a room issue, I'd like to keep the gcvw to under 45,000.
