Anyway my clutch is now just going right to floor and I cannot get my tranny into gear(obviously). I've only had this 40 for 3 weeks, but the PO said the clutch was pretty new. The PO said he had attempted to adjust it before to get the release point right at the floor. Is there some sort of adjustment I can do or does the system need to be bled? I am a 40 and a clutch newbie, so hit me with the obvious.

It sounds like your clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder are going out, fluid could be going right by the seal. bleeding is also a possibility, but it should get a little better if you pump it a couple of times if thats the case.

Make sure there is fluid in the master. Maybe he never bleed it when he replaced it. You coiuld give that a try. I had a similar problem and had to replace the clutch master.

hehe....Magoo did that yesterday. The trick is to start in gear the 1st time and just remember to yank it into neutral before you stop. Make sure your brakes are good just in case you can't hit neutral quick enough. :D Oh and if you think I am serious, get some sweet stickers for your truck and post it in your sig line, then forget anything I said and fix your slave/master. :D

The push rod on the clutch slave may need adjusting, especially if the PO was fooling around with it. Bleed it first and then after that is ruled out check the rod length. As you adjust it the clutch should get better or worse until you got it to where you like it.

You post brings back fond memories of coming home from a camping trip in the 40 that was 350 miles from home. I had to make the whole 350 mile ride home with no clutch. Not a big deal shifting without the clutch if you are moving, but it made stopping for gas and lights in towns quite interesting.

Well I bled the clutch this weekend and it tightened back up. Then drove it up and down the driveway and the slave is spitting fluid. I guess I'll replace that. Should I do the master also? it looks pretty dry with no leaking. I'm gonna order the slave from MAF(any problems with thiers?) b/c I have a gift certificate to blow.

One more question, which slave cylinder do I order? I have a 12/72 build date but the tranny/tcase are 4 speeds from a 76. So which year do I order for? stock f engine btw
