hi all,
I have just received a clutch kit from exedy clutches in the uk their part number TYK2023 my garage tells me that the new clutch pressure plate has 9 holes and the one in the FJ has 6 bolt holes where it bolts onto the the flywheel, does anyone know the correct Toyota part number for a 1975 aus fj40 with a 2F engine and if I can get one in the uk ?
I don't mind getting one in aus or the us but the postage is horrendous. Would sincerely appreciate any help or advice.
Thanks Stan.

9 is correct. 6 for the bolts, 3 for the alignment pins. If some moron ditched your pins while servicing the flywheel [they have to be pulled to re-create the proper step] then you need to get three replacement pins, not a different pressure plate.

Thanks guys, so basically what you are both saying is that the tyk2023 is a later clutch kit but it should fit, is that correct ?

The mechanic tells me that it is a lever clutch in mine ! I.e. Three finger as opposed to diaphragm in the 2F As far as I can tell the lever type clutch was in the F engine and the diaphragm in the 2F BUT I have a 2F engine. Is it possible to have the lever type clutch in the 2F from the factory ?

Checked my engine number it's 2f365388 and as far as I can tell this engine is a 78/79 whereas my cruiser was built Nov. 75 and registered Jan 76

  1. Ask your mechanic if the throwout bearing that comes in the kit looks like the one that was in the truck. This will help narrow things down.

Another little bit of info. I went into the garage today to check this out and find that the engine number I gave in here which was in the reg docs is wrong, the actual engine number on the block is 2F150400 so I would assume a replacement. The odd thing is that I definitely have a 2F engine and 4spd gearbox but what looks like the earlier clutch with levers which I thought was only on the 3.9 F engine with the 3spd box (unless I'm wrong on that one ) is there any way of identifying if the engine number corresponds to the vin number which is fj40213646 ?
The release bearing in the new diaphragm clutch kit I got is different. I'm not that keen to change to the new type as I'm pretty sure that would involve changing the flywheel too and unfortunately due to my location it's not easy and it's expensive to get bits shipped here.

When I installed the 4-speed and transfer case from a '78 FJ55 in my '71 FJ40 (that has a '76 2F) I used the '71 3-finger clutch and flywheel.

if you change over to the later diaphragm style clutch you may need to change the clutch fork and carrier hub and release bearing as well, all my 2F cruisers have had the later clutch so I don't know about the compatibility between them

IIRC I had to move the clutch slave over to the passenger side (right side) and install the above using the 4-speed bellhousing. In other words, as long as those parts are compatible either clutch/flywheel set-up will work - you can't mix-and-match components.
