My 240k mile ‘05 has a clunk when shifting into drive. I can also sometimes reproduce it at speed by going from coasting to accelerating.

This is the list of stuff I’ve put together for the shop to check out at my next appointment— anything else they should look at?
  • Grease all shafts properly
  • Inspect U-joints
  • Inspect slip yokes
  • Fresh fluids:
    • transmission
    • transfer case
    • both diffs
  • Check driveshaft balance
  • Torque all flange hardware
  • Check Engine + transmission mounts
  • Check rear control arm bushings / panhard bushings

The front bushing on the housing is the main culprit.

Re using hub flange Snap Ring, result in damage to FDS axle snap ring groove.

Hi, i'm new to the forum. Have a 2002 LX470 100 series and just learning about this beautiful car. Which housing is this exactly?

Front differential. Take off the plastic shield under your car and you'll see it

Number one is wheel hub flange to FDS (AKA: CV) axle splines. You'll chase clunk endless if they're not corrected first.

Axle hub flange to axle excessive play. Toyota 100 series - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alBo9ZvB2f0&t=41s

Mine would rotate what looked like a 1/4" back and forth when tested. Replacing with OEM CV and flanges got rid of it almost completely. I then replaced motor and transmission mounts and it got worse lol I think new firmer mounts exaggerated clunking from the diff mounts. Diff mounts are next up when I get around to it.

Also to OP I would replace CV and hub flanges together. If you just do the hub flanges I suspect the worn CV's will rock back and forth in there and wear them out again.

1000000000000000% this. Slapping new flanges on will fix the problem for a few weeks but youll be right back to clunking. You want new CVs AND new flanges at the same time. And might as well do your wheel bearings while youre in there.

I replaced every diff bushing on mine first and they didnt do anything for the clunk, but i at least have all new diff bushings at least

If your doing the wheel bearing while your in there (its a great idea) you might want to do the front brakes as well, its a slippery slope lol
