Power squadron etc do radio couses for boaters all time. Were signs up in duncan for radio courses not too long ago.

Marine would be the same thing, would it not? In a sailing town like vic, there's gotta be some courses going. Yacht clubs, sailing schools , chandlers, someone will have some info.

Different licence I believe...Andrew?

Different license. And those "walky talkies" you posted a link to are actually UHF and amateur radio frequencies... at 5 watts power. Covered under your amateur radio (basic) license :)

Well, ham uhf freq = 420-450 mhz.

Traditional FRS = 462.5625 to 467.7125. Using I believe 1/2 watt power, which makes the use of them exempt from licencing in Canada since Sept 2004. Assuming they are using 1/2 watt or lower power and only on those frequencies, you'd be exempt.

Edit: USA and some other countries are allowed 420-450 for ham users, Canada apparently is only 430-450 mhz.

Andrew, have you successfully used the baofeng to call out KM markers on a forestry road?

You're technically not supposed to, but yes it can be done. The Baofengs also have a Narrow band setting that (hypothetically, if you were to do it) should be used.

When using these handhelds INSIDE a vehicle it's also recommended to use an external antenna, such as Tram 1185 Amateur Dual-Band Magnet Antenna: Amazon.ca: Cell Phones & Accessories otherwise a lot of the signal is lost due to the metal cage of the truck.

Probably do a group buy with club funds Jimbo. Walkie talkies or UHF turned down

Seapotato and I have all the bugs worked out of ours. Excellent range and frequency.
Potential group buy, who's in?
PS: that's a legit selfie!

If beer cans can achieve the correct frequency for maximum rogers per second, I can assist with grouup buy.

I can also include a custom selfie stick to massively increase sales.
