Pound for pound I don't find the aluminum surplus military medical boxes to be any heavier than plastic of similar size and strength.
I have two of the short top size and use them frequently.

exactly my set-up. still wish they were about 3/4 the size; just add a third and call it a day. tuck nice under the rig. stack well, dang near bear proof, I believe it will float, heck, you could almost take a bath in one...

yea rusty, i agree just after you get the camp stove, food pots and pans, cast iron at that, and propane tanks, well it got heavy, but not so heavy i could not pick it up.

I actually like the size. I'd like to rig a way to use the tops for tables in camp.

if you cut some notches in the rim of the lid, the lid can be turned perpendicular to the tub and if one of the clips are relocated, then that clip can hold the "table" to the tub at one spot enough to keep the cantilevered end from tipping...I have also thought about making some telescoping legs for them, but hey, that's like work...

you mean, instead of reinventing the wheel? where's the fun in that?

Well it would have to have leveling legs and stuff...

Never really understood this phylosophy. Need to level it out? Use the heel of your boot.

dirt people...meh.

I used one of these for quite a long time till I built the slide out "kitchen" in the rear of my 60.

^^I've seen that before, but don't remember what brand or name? What is it? Tin steel? Or wood?

It's a "campmate" by Dosko and I believe their molded plastic. Great design, not sure why they stopped making them.

Yep, Campmate by Dosko. Molded plastic. Worked really well for many years.

not everyone is a friggin hillbilly..some of us done got some class and shiat..

I really think that aluminum is without a doubt, especially when you get into "chuck boxes"..has to be the go to material. Wood is nice, and with some care and considerations, will last a damn long time, but 1/8" aluminum...now you're talking.

Wanting to build a basic box of my own in the next couple of months. Really wanting to go the military container route but finding them local does not seem to be happening.

I started with a Dave Gore (4plusproducts@gmail.com) 4plus dual swing out bumper/tire carrier. I removed the basket from the right side (for sale for $50- plus shipping --> pm me) and attached an under mount truck box from Tractor Supply, which I adapted with shelves, top rim, led light and lift-up side shelf (designed for rolling tool boxes). You can see the drawer unit I built, which has 35 gallons water underneath, with 12 pump - for water on demand...
