Another issue was recently discovered...
Seems there is a such thing as too much flex!!
The Pittman arm issue returned!!
Turns out when maxing out the droop on the PS, I was also maxing out the angle of the FJ80 TRE!! So the Pittman arm had to bend to accommodate the flex.
So I had to get a 1 in drop pitman arm and upgrade to a 1 ton TRE that has roughly DOUBLE the angle deflection as the FJ80 TRE.
Just returned from dusy ershim trail and no signs of binding, so hopefully this is resolved!!

Hmm
Just finished my build. Street tested only.
Out of town for a significant period. Think I'll order a 1" drop x 6.5" pitman arm.
It'll be waiting for me when I get back.
Hope I remember to swap it out before breaking it!

Not sure how I missed this...I must have looked at this thread a thousand times when building my truck.

Anyway, I had the exact same issue with regards to bending the pitman arm and I am running 1 ton TRE's. I got one of these from Georg...don't think it'll bend:

Ended up doing the same thing, only not George's pittman arm.
The 1ton TRE's and the drop solved the issue.

One thing with a ultra strong pitman arm to consider is that now the weak link is the sector shaft. I would rather bend a pitman arm on the trail than snap a sector shaft. A sector shaft repair in the middle of nowhere? Thats a tough fix. I guess you could weld it back on, but that will ruin the ps box. A bent pitman arm will still get you home and is an easy fix when you get home.

If you have hydro assist then I don't think that your pitman arm is the weak point. When you steer with hydro assist isn't the amount of force you put through the wheel drastically reduced?

I thought the point was to increase force but also move all the force away from the box to the tie rod.

Two things, if you are not binding the steering, the pittman arm should not bend (unless you hit something HARD, like another vehicle;) )

And yes, hydro assist takes a ton of stress off the steering box nad the rest of the system.

All back together and ready to wheel next weekend!!

First pic is of the rubber mounts that I used. You can see they protrude through the x member plate which is what allows the flex to happen.
Hopefully it'll work.

Next is the x member in and everything in place.

Chicago,
Did this end up being the ultimate fix for your tranny/tcase/tcase issues?

I'm about to start on my scout 700/203/Split tcase and am curious to see how it all worked out for you.

Mace

Mace,
NO!!!
It was not. The problem ended up being the adapter threads. They ALL stripped out. Helicoiled all of em and have not had a problem since.

However, the "through" bushing, in the pic above, I'm sure helped the situation.

Thanks amigo

It's been a while since I read this thread so I can't remember if you actually used Rough Country leafs, but this caught my eye this morning! :hillbilly:

NO. I did NOT use rough country springs!! That's pretty funny, though. They are FJ 60 springs and axles.
