I don't have the OD vibration that are in the other 2000 transmission threads.. but I'll post this now and we'll see how long it lasts.

A real MONSTER metal shaving was on one of the plugs. It looks solid, but it's so thin it disintegrates upon touching (or so I was told).

Enjoy!

My cruiser shop recommended I just wait until it blows up / he wasn't even sure he should have shown me these pics.

Those look furry! How many miles? At 90k I had only a slight bit of metallic paste on mine.

I don't suppose you have enough fluid left that you'd can get a sample to send off to Blackstone? I'd really like to get more samples posted up here so that we can see if there are any common traces preceding a failure (not saying yours will or will not).

So is that clutch material or something else?

wow, that is a lot... how many miles on it?

I'm at 120k miles. I can't send fluid because.. it's gone :( I would have..

I'm not sure how long it has been since the last exchange.. I wonder when the Lexus service schedule suggests it? I see one at 30k via a quick glance. It must be buried in one of the XXk services.

I think I will check again soon to see how much material it's spitting out...

Yikes, that is about what mine looked like when they dropped the pan after it was stalling in gear. Aside from the cost, the new tranny is really great. Smooth and firm shifts. My tranny certainly wasn't normal beforehand, but I didn't know because it was like that when I got it with 105k, 20k later, tranny blew up.

Hahaha, that's reassuring :)

What route did you take for tranny replacement, and what did it cost?

Booo

Those plates in the pan are magnets. The frass clumped on the magnets is steel, even the monster chunks that look big enough to have part numbers on them. Worn clutch material is dispersed in the fluid.

Yuji, Your guy probably did you a favor. At least you can get ready for what is coming. Having time to get a replacement trans on the shelf before this one lets go might be the only upside.

There's still at least 1/2 left up in the TC and cooler unless they've already refilled and 'contaminated' with new fluid.

FWIW, oil analysis is very helpful as an early warning system for wear that liberates metals into the oil. The frass in this pan might be stronger evidence than an oil analysis. Just sayin'.

The analysis isn't to help with this particular situation as it appears the die has already been cast. But rather to build a database of samples from which we can be able to differentiate between 'good' and 'failing'.

If your mechanic said he wasn't sure he should even show you those pics you should probably find a new mechanic.

I mean he was feeling bad about telling me this because it's one of those things I'm not going to do anything about until it fails. $4k, ouch!

Hmm yeah.... I would love to find a junker for many of its parts... How does one go about finding a 100 series parts anyways? I doubt it would last long.

This is why I never have opened my trans. I want it to be a surprise.

Indeed... I wish it was a surprise. Damn it! Now I feel like I'm driving a truck made of glass. :bang:

I wonder how long I have?

Un an unrelated note, I also ran into into a hand rail at my house today (there's some basement stairs I weasel my way over day). What else you got for me cruiser gods?

More excuse to beat the crap out of this thing in the woods!

I've driven about 30-40 miles since this was done. Think it's too late?

If not, how much fluid do I need? Where's the cooler?

Wow I have 211000 on my original trans in my 2000 lc. Shifts awesome. Fluid always clean when I change it. I aquired this lc at 159000 and change the fluid every 15-20k. One thing that is confusing is the dealership where I work (toyota) tells me the drain and fill takes almost 4 quarts but literature for this year says something like 2 quarts. I always put 3 and 1/2 to 3 3/4 quarts back in and level is good according to the dipstick. Guess I should consider myself lucky as far as tranny life goes.

I'm not convinced that there aren't thousands of us driving around with pans that look like this. You could drain and full and never know. Why is everyone sure this is the precursor to the infamous MY 2000 tranny failure mode? I'd still drive the heck out of it.
:meh:

Just for reference, this is what mine looked like at around 90k. No metal bits, just a little paste. Don't know if I represent a clean sample or not.

You need about 1/2 cup is all. But not that it's half new fluid it's probably late to be a good statistical sample.
