Hey All,

I am trying to remove the paint on my 75 fj40 body parts. I do not want to spend hundreds of dollars on having someone sandblast the parts. Body was originally white and then got painted green by PO's. So, what should I use? paint stripper? sand it off (what grit do I use)? I would also like to strip the paint off some oem steelies I will be using.

Thanks for the help,
Meatloaf

John,

I do not mind the work. Body if off the frame and it will be a while before everything gets put back on. I am not looking for show quality paint, I am doing the work myself. I dont mind doing the labor either. as for the sandblast, I know what you mean, I just don't see myself spending $700+ for sandblast. I do have a HF 40lb blaster but my compressor does not seem to be enough. I also assume that with a cheap/small blaster as this, it would take a long time to blast the tub & parts...

Thanks for the feedback... Keep it coming.

Luis

Hiya, I used about 1.5 gal of the aircraft paint remover from oreillys. I think it was 15 a gallon. That and some scrapers, gloves, steel wool, grill brushes, and a shop vac got most all of the paint off. You wanna use eyeprotection, gloves, and a mask too. It'll get the paint off the body panels pretty quick, but since it's down to bare metal, you have to watch for flash rust.

4" DA sander with 60 or 80 grit works very well and quickly for the big panels. A cheap soda blaster from Harbor Freight works well for getting in the nooks and crannies. Start with a paint stripper, though.

4" or 4.5" angle grinder with a wire wheel. I don't really suggest sanding disks because at high RPM's they make the surface smooth, which is not what you want if you plan on repainting your parts.
