What about this alternative?.

It's made in Australia by cross country 4x4 for the 1HD-T. It's fairly more expensive than the 4wdbits one (250 € more), but it includes a 10" fan by Davies Craig (good brand) under it and the hood scoop with a template to cut the bonnet in the right place.

I think the scoop is from the Hi-lux. If we added the price of the fan and the scoop to the 4wdbits one, this new one would still be 100€ more, but maybe the effort is worth cause it's closer to the front and maybe the scoop is at the 75 cm to the front that syche stated the airflow starts, we had to measure the distance anyway.

The size is 28x30x7.5 vs the 22x25x6 of the 4wdbits unit. Being bigger, it's likely to have a slower response, but I don't know how much. My mechanic says the 4wdbits unit is bigger enough for these engines.

Here the rubber seal is missing but they told me it's included with the kit.

What do you think? should we stick with the 4wdbits one or is this a better alternative?

sounds great .. just want to see the complete 80 picture .. I'm under the impresion that scoop looks a little tiny in the 80 series hood.

I was looking in their website .for the 0 series intercooler with no success .. but foudn this Nissan Patrol intercooler that looks much more adecuate for a 4.2 engine ..

Twin scoops! :eek::grinpimp:

I'm not paranoid about it, but just not THAT fond of chopping the cross-member/bracing(?) on (underside of) the hood.

But if a push comes to shove (Or something like that, right?) I'd seriously consider it.

A nice alternative, that's for sure!

I agree, that's what I don't like about it. It's the scoop from the Toyota Hi-Lux.

But in these pictures it looks better:

This intercooler could be bigger, but it's not small at all. For instance, it's bigger than the stock intercooler that comes with the HDJ100.

If you want a bigger scoop, I would not get hung up on the ones that are not for any Toyota trucks.

Not sure if I'd still go with something like the WRX's though. :hillbilly:

I have considered the Troopy/Big Horn's before, but not sure how much air it could suck in (Don't remember it having that big of an opening).

Hey Mot! I tend to agree with you on the hood scoop from the Isuzu Trooper/Long Horn. It's must larger than the one on the Hilux, but then again it is more elongated horizontally, so I wonder if it would suit the 4wdbits intercooler. I also looked at the scoops from the 2001 WRX and also the Suzuki Vitara. I suppose one could find these two in the junkyard somewhere.

Gregor,

The WRX scoop screams too much "rice" for me, but being taller, it might actually scoop a little more air than the Trooper/Big Horn scoop.

I've never known the Grand Vitara to have (turbo) diesel and hence had not seen the scoop until seeing your post! It doesn't look that bad at all!

I see some guys at Suzuki once a week, so I'll have to ask them if it's something that they can get the PN for and see if I can acquire one or something!

Mot .. good shot .. !!!! I thought the trooper scoop it's the perfect size fit for the 80 series .. ( need to see how it fit in the80 series hood )

I will search for one onf those here in Panamá and take some pics with it over my 80 series 80 hood ..

I just recieved an email from cross country 4x4 and they stated that "710 from the front of the bonnet to where the front of the cutout is for the scoop".

Syche stated there is airflow until 750mm from the front of the bonnet, so there may be some air flow with this setup.

Here are some close-up pics of the hood/bonnet scoop(s), as well as the size of the intercooler on the Trooper/Big Horn (Scoop wider than the intercooler).

Someone may have mentioned this already, but here is my two cents....

This kit seems really pricey, seeing as how you can get universal kits on ebay for $100 or less.... The only part that is really needed is the adapter to go from the stock square intake to the round pipe. Has anyone asked if you can buy that part separately? with a bit of ingenuity I think a top mount intercooler should be able to be done for under $200...

Please correct me if I'm wrong here, I have been thinking about this for awhile, but haven't bit yet....

Airflow along the bonnet isn't as important as pressure difference from above to below the bonnet.
Has anyone checked this?

thought it's as same as the exhaust turbo manifold .. if AXT, turbo glide or safari where selling their exhaust manifold alone your will be able to build yoru own turbo kit for about 500 - 800 USD .. and not 3K USD as they sold the " kit "

the same here .. if they sell alone the matching part sure they will sell alots and maybe ( just maybe ) make more money just with the adapter compared to the entire " intercooler kit "

Is there an easy way to check this?

Yes. Run a clear plastic hose from under the bonnet to on-top of the bonnet.
Loop the hose in the middle and have some water in it. Go for a drive and watch the difference in water level.

The pressure difference (in Pascals Pa) = 9810 x difference in height (measured in metres).

Whooooooosh!!!

In case you couldn't tell, that was the sound of what you've said going (way) over my head (- man).:hillbilly:
