I'm trying to figure out the EVAP system and some gas smells, etc. with my 1977 FJ40. I've looked at some other threads, but the pictures I've seen and diagrams in my manual don't seem to line up with what I have. Obviously, it's not hooked up or functional but it doesn't even seem to have anything other than a cutoff hose from the bottom and a couple wires at the top...
The engine is 2F desmogged with a Holley Sniper 2300.
I saw Redline Cruisers has a complete kit but I'm trying to see if I can test it or get it to function somehow before throwing too much money at it.
Suggestions? I haven't taking it apart yet, that was my next step (which sometimes makes things worse....)

So you should check all the hoses that attach to your gas tank. Clamps can be loose or the hoses cracked or rotted if they are nearly 50 years old.

^^^Me too - works well!

The redline kit works well, Ive installed it. Make sure your evap separator (in the cab behind the shield rear of the passenger seat) is present / intact as well. If it isnt, I sell replacements (see signature for links).

Also make sure you have the right gas cap if you add an EVAP system back in… Cap should let air in but not out. If you have an OEM cap for a 77 it should be ok.

I would love to find a replacement toyota charcoal canister thats still avail, need to do some digging.

Thanks for the tips! I don't have the evap separator - will check out the link for one. I think the gas cap is a random aftermarket that fits (came with the rig).

I know this pic quality from my old timey microfiche is busy and not that great, but maybe you'll get an idea of what you have and what may be missing. Check the number of metal tube to flexible hose connections.

Kudos for a microfiche reference!

I'm going to pop off the passenger seat and check out the lines. PO installed the holley system with send/return fuel lines but it seems to be pretty much what remains of the system. Fuel gauge doesn't work either so that's another related issue. I did get a new sending unit but think it's more of a wiring issue for that.

Your pic is the front heater.
I'm a little puzzled by the heater unit (as pictured) since there's one loose wire and the hose from the bottom is cut. I do have functional heat so will have to investigate that piece a little...

www.compyfab.com is my site, for a 77 you will probably want the model 1112 (replaces toyota p/n 77193-60011 and 60012).

For a gas cap, you’ll want p/n 77310-14070, which you can still buy new from Toyota.

Impressed, will order one when I get some more funds !

The unit pictured is your heater blower and the hose at the bottom is a drain. If your heater unit with core and all plumbing is working you will have radiant heat coming from your in cab heater, albeit without the blower.
