Last week my girlfriend checked the coolant and forgot to put the cap back on the truck. She ended up driving it until it wouldn't go anymore, I pulled plugs and every cylinder shot out a ton of coolant. Lots of coolant in the oil when I drained it too. I pulled the head had it resurfaced and checked. I put everything back together. Yesterday I thought everything would be good to go, but the truck just turns over now, doesnt sound like it wants to fire or even run rough.

I'm "pretty sure" that the timing is good because it seems like it would at least run like crap. I've gone back through and checked wires and they all seem good, unless something got pulled and I'm just not seeing it.

Short of taking it in for a diagnostic test and dumping some cash I'm pretty lost. If anybody has a list of steps of things to check I would be forever grateful. Thanks in advance. Nick

Check for spark, check for fuel, then its probly most likely the timing. probly you mest up in puting the timing chain back on and all that.

It's getting fuel up to the line going into the manifold. I'm not sure if the injectors are firing fuel into the cylinders. Whats the best way to check that it's getting into them? Also whats the best way to check for spark to each cylinder?

Easiest way for spark is to buy a spark tester. Has a tube with a fillament that lights up when your getting spark. Other than that, take a screwdriver, put it in the plug, find a clean peice of metal (usually brake master) and ground it off on there. JUST DONT TOUCH ANY METAL with your bare hands. You should gap it .25" and see spark between the screwdriver and brake master. Make sure the distributer is plugged in, make sure coil is hooked up, make sure the coil is good. First time i did my head gasket, my coil went bad for some reason. We were freaked out. If you did the work well, its just a matter of eliminating the small things. Wristy has a freaking HUGE bank of 22r/e knowledge in his head. He could help you into the nitty-gritty details.

Thanks everybody for the replies.

liljlandon- I'm going to check for spark tomorrow

Mike- whats air lock?

KLF- it's a 22re with 220,000 plus miles on the truck not sure how many on the engine.

Tonkota- the head was milled but the valves haven't been adjusted yet. I'll look into that tomorrow.

Thanks again, and if anybody else has any suggestions I'd really apprecitae them. Take Care, Nick

Why are you even fixing that peice of junk...

Did you let everyone know it has a pink bumper?!

I am going to start cutting it apart so you have to turn it into a crawler! Or sell it to Yugo for 50 bux.

Take a fresh look at it tomorrow....start at the beginning make sure everything is hooked back up then check timing marks, spark test, timing light spark test, check for fuel make sure air isnt lockin up your fuel line and listen for the pump in the tank.........once i had this same problem and tried, and checked and tried everything gave up next morning noticed harness still disconnected at the air filter box....

So after going back through and checking everything again. I can get it to start if I crank on the starter, and pump the gas or floor it. But it will only run for 5 secs max? I've played with moving the distributor back and forth a couple teeth, but the results seem the same. Any new suggestions to try? Thanks, Nick

you talkin about the air valve for the preheater, or the choke? the preheater has nothing to do with how well it runs, its only there to help the engine warm up

if its the choke, and you close it, you got a lean condition which means you got an intake leak

oh a 22RE. not a R... somtimes it helps to read the whole thread...

check your ground wires! all that flap, ( wich is called the metering plate inside the Air Flow Meter :flipoff2: ) does, is turn on the fuel pump and dictate how much fuel your engine gets.

there are 2 important ground locations.
one off the alternator harness that is supposed to be bolted back to the power steering bracket.

the other comes out of the main EFI harness and bolts to the plenum. I think there is a link to a pic i took of different years in the FAQ.

Do you have a code? Well have you checked?? Check these things and report back. buy your girlfriend some flowers.

no way man.

a sensor as in mass air flow senor gets its info from a bimetallic probe that cools, using thermal contraction and expansion, at a faster rate as air passes it, creating voltage.

a meter measures the rate of flow by means of a mechanical door using a potentiometer, this means resistance, or ohms, creating no voltage at all.

HA! :flipoff2:
