I have a strong suspicion one or more of my cats has died. Driving home from work today I gradually lost power and the exhaust note disappeared. My wife noted that she usually can hear me pulling up to the house, but not now. Also, the vacuum line on the bottom of the EGR blew off. From what I've read on Mud, these are signs of a failed cat. It did throw a P0420 once when I was in Baja six weeks ago, but it never came back after being cleared. I know I had a crack in the crotch of the Y pipe in the exhaust header, which I had plugged with muffler putty before Baja, but it is now leaking again. As I understand it, that will only throw off the O2 sensors, but I'm guessing if it is causing the truck to run rich it could have overheated the cats with unburned fuel? Are there any other diagnostics I can perform? Note that I am not showing a CEL, though I would have thought if the cat failed it would throw a P0420 again??

Thanks,

Rod

Plan on getting a new 3 phase cc and be doen with it.
They are tiny compared to the stock 2 phase cc.

Unfortunately I live in the People's Republic of Kalifornia and the OEM cats are the only legal solution.

Yep sounds like its clogged .
OK here comes the Getto Fab fix .
Drop the rear cat and pull it out . If you cant look thru it its beat if its got some big chunks in it the front one gone too.
Now tie up the rear pipe and take to for a cruise . If you have good power back (other then just sort of loud) you may have gotten lucky and toasted just the rear one .
Heres the Getto part . Knock the middle of the 2nd one and install the shell . then replace both O2s and if the one cats still working you'll not toss a code and may pass smog (in NJ it passes the sniffer and the eye test).

Other then that Mr T and Cdan dogs will eat like kings

Thanks - I'll give that a try Saturday morning.

BTW - I did find that KC Converters carries rebuilds, $175+core for the front and $275+core for the rear. However, when I told them I was in Kalifornia, they said they could still do it, but it would cost more to provide a unit that is CARB certified (they apparently have to pack the cats with more material). The salesperson said they would call the factory to get the "special" price and call me back. Still waiting for that call but I will post the results when I get it.

You could contact Jacki/Gary at his shop MudRak in Sonoma Ca. I am about to take my 97 80 series out to him for some exhaust work. Plan on about a month wait for him to get you in. Super nice both he and Jacki his receptionist..
