Running a stock motor in my 73 FJ 40 with a Holley 32/36 DGV5A. Looking for carburetor recommendations. What are people running out there? Who is having luck with what?

Any thoughts on a Holly Sniper EFI? There is a thread in the 60 section and another in the 40 section I believe. Just a thought.

@Trollhole has a line of carbs he sells, that are bolt in replacements for oem carbs. They're good stuff.

As to the sniper efi, looks very promising! @FJ60Cam is building a customer truck with one iirc. Fuel Injection is the way to go for sure (if given the choice) and the modern bolt on, self learning systems available now seem to be really good.

I have had the best luck with the @Racer65 City Racer carb. I have been a Trollhole fan for years and just decided to try the racer carb. Honestly, I like it better. It’s made in Japan. The price is basically the same as TH. City racer worked great right out of the box. Very little fiddling involved.

I’ve heard good reviews on the few Sniper installs I’ve seen. Looks like you already have the intake adapter too.

I hope to have this one running soon!

As far as carbs, which I try to avoid these days, my first choice would be a stock unit rebuilt and tuned by Jim C. A distant second choice would be a Fuji from City Racer (I have a used one if you need it).

But really, fuel injection is the way to go!

I wonder if Offenhauser still makes intake manifolds for the big 6s? Would eliminate need for an adapter, match that up with a long tube header and the right distributor and you have a totally new ball game.

Edit: How about the guys running these motors in Supras etc? They have to have some manifolds that will work.

How would one convert over to fuel injection? Doesn’t that mean changing engines?

Nope. There are a few fuel injection kits available for these motors. The old way was a caddy tbi hack but now AFI and Howell has a kit as well as the holley sniper kit. It would make wonders for driveability.

dude

Just buy a Trollhole carb and be done with it.

And here is a link to the Fuji carb from City Racer. '73 was a change-over year between cable vs. mechanical linkage carbs. You need to know what you have. If you have all the mechanical linkage, the Racer carb is a straight bolt-on. If you have a cable set-up you have to either convert to mechanical to use this carb or just go with the Trollhole cable actuated carb.

Trollhole, Marshall Shepherd, is in SC and has a splendid reputation in the forums. City Racer, Roger, has an equally splendid reputation on the forum and also has a large line of reproduction parts. His customer service is excellent! Either of them will stand behind the goods they sell. Personally I have bought from both and would buy again in a heartbeat.

I had an Offenhauser Intake and Weber carb on my 40 but it wasn't the "look" I was going for. I will say, the Weber/Offy DID perform better, but it's really tricky getting the Weber tuned. @ErikinSC struggled to get his right. I have a Jim C tuned stock carb that I haven't installed yet because the Trollhole has been doing the job just fine.

Another for the Fiji from cityracer. It just works and @roadstr6 recommends it. So it can't be all that bad.
