I've heard that for wheeling it's better to have EFI. I have an 83 mini and am trying to decide whether to keep the stock 22r and upgrade it (cams, weber carb, exhaust) or go with an engine swap, something with EFI. What do you guys think? I'm not looking to make "alot" of power, just something that will work as a DD and trail rig.

I put a 22re in my 80 pickup, holy wiring nightmare (If you hate wiring schematics like I do). I must say though, it was worth the work. Get in, turn the key, it started everytime and wasn't even slightly bothered at extreme angles. My only qualm was that I wish I'd had the engine built up, because I didn't notice a whole lot of improvement over my old carbed engine as far as power goes, and I didn't think it would bother me but it did.

LetCoast- Is it really possible to put EFI on a carbed 22r? If it is....what do you have and how much do you want for it?

22RE stuff bolts right on to a 22R head.

with a 20R head, RV cam hedder on a 22R block is the only finacially reasonable way to get a significant power gain out of a Toyota 4 cylinder engine.

the EFI setup is much more stable off road.
the main and biggest concern on the 22R is the damned float level getting sideways and starving fuel on a bad as off camber hill.

I wonder if that is what my truck has. I've got all the EFI conversion parts at my house, and I tore down all the carb junk and voila, the manifold doesn't fit...

so I tuned the carb, so far so good, it runs fantastic at angles and climbing or descending steep stuff.

It idled right on down white knuckle hill, actually really surprised me. I've found that when climbing steep stuff I have to make sure to stay in the gas to keep it going, but I don't really have any issues with bogging. Off camber, no problems yet, and it will get pretty far comfortably.

I adjusted the floats to just above the bottom of the sight bowl, I added a breather tube that connects to the bowl vent and goes to the firewall, and I also added a fuel pressure regulator. I also completely disassembled the carb and replaced all of the diaphragms and cleaned it thoroughly, and I eliminated all emissions and unecessary vacuum lines.

I thought that you needed an 84 or later 22RE head to make the swap?
There is a lot of info on Pirate4x4 for the swap if you are looking for more resources.

Another option that I think is cool is swaping to propane. Looks much easier than adding EFI and makes your 25 y/o truck one of the cleanest running things on the road.

Personally I considered propane, but since I already have EFI parts (sunk cost) I figure for the 1200 it'll cost for propane and tanks, I can just about re-build my engine and have a new engine and EFI.

I planned on it this winter, now, not sure sure. The carb runs great!

Is it true that EFI engines last longer than carbed ones? I think I read that somewhere.

oh right. sorry about that. this is true

You dont know how many times I've wanted to call LC Enginearring and tell (give it away) them that exact thing.

Always to bussy (planing home made Lotus 7, 20/22r combo "ILUVEFI")

i have a junk head, that i just pulled off my truck.

hmmm. i was thinking about taking it to a machine shop and having them cut off the intake side. and later on, i will find a 20R head and do the same.

and by combining and filling, boring holes, i hope to make a adapter.

then if it works out right, i will have it moled and cast.

DOA Racing 20R EFI Head

Not an adapter, but a solution.

interesting.

i called a few machine shops and explained what i wanted to.

none had a band saw large enuff, and they called me crazy for wanting to butcher a head.

meh.

i'll get r done.

Havent you guys seen ANY, hot rod, 4WD, or customizing TV shows?

Ahh, MONSTER GARAGE all you need to make is the bottom half of the RE's intake, a plate, some square (or round) tube, make the holes match, bolt on and use the rest of the RE stuff.

Look at a Weber side draft, picture without the carbs and tubing instead, then notch the tubing to curve up (like botom RE), add an adapter plate :)

It can be done I just dont have the resources :frown: (and spell check)

Like fabing a header, well allmost.

I didn't see anything???

Does it use Toyota EFI parts or a Ford distributor, a Pontiac sunfire computer, Saab injectors, the knock sensor from a Caddilac, wiring harness from an Internatinal scout, throttle body (the 4 prong one not the 6 prong) from a 2.8L Chevrolet camero ..........?

Chevy vega steering column, brake booster from a "Whillys Overland".........
