When camping the best option for certain food items is often canned.
Back in the day I always used the Echo combo can opener/ bottle opener. Multi-taskers rule.
Over the past 10 years I have notice this brand has turned to crap.
My new fav is the Swing a way I picked one up at the local restaurant supply place and it rocks.

What is everyone else using?

Dan-the new Swing-aways are made in China and the quality is nowhere near what it was when our mothers used one every day for decades. One more piece of poor quality Chinese consumer goods.

But the good news is that one of the old Swing-away guys bought the equipment and is still making the old ones now called Ez-Duz-It. I have one in the truck and one in the house. Not quite up to my mom's Swing-away, but very, very good.

Just like the old one though, it has hardened carbon steel parts-so it can rust if you don't dry it after you wash it.

Funny thread. I drive my wife nuts (well, more nuts than I normally drive her by just breathing and being alive) when we visit various stores since I most often check out the can openers they have on display, always looking for the ultimate opener.

I've had enough junk ones fail on long trips in the oz bush where canned food is a staple when you are out for several weeks and all the fresh stuff has been consumed. I've more than once had to revert to the opener on swiss army knives in desperation.

It's another sad comment on the typical greed of manufacturers (aka distributors) that something so simple 'needs' to be imported garbage from china to maximise their profits.

I'll look at picking up an actual made in the USA unit. Thanks for the link Drew.

cheers,
george.

Like Mace said, P38 or John Wayne. I always have one with me and it never fails to do the job.

I have a P38, actually a few. They came with the Korean War Era C rations we ate working for the National Forest Service back in the 70's. They do work, however I don't need that kind of frustration when I camp.

Think of it as meditation.. can't it too fast or too slow. Zen and the p38 ;)

All kidding aside, if I think ahead, I'll pick up the cheapest one in the local store. When that fails (which is common) I end up using the one on my keychain

No country of origin stamped on our swing away. If it's made in China it's still miles ahead of any other can opener we have had in the last 25 years.

Mace, the can opener on my first gen Leatherman works amazingly well. Not at all like the old scout knife can openers.

Too much work with the sledge hammer. Years ago a mate & I were out camping and he loves baked beans...

We like target shooting when camped and had a whole bunch of cans from several days camp and had placed them on low branches and other spots. Out came the rifles and we take turns at the various cans. At some point I aimed at the one 'live' can... Bang, thud, what's that raining out of the sky my mate asks... you bastard, it's my bake beans, you've shot my baked beans....

:)

cheers,
george.

This works pretty well. Sorry for the fuzzy pic
If not this, OXO makes a good opener-cuts the can lid on the outer ring(not in the indent) No sharp edges-very reliable, quality construction.(we've had ours for over 10 yrs-still works great)

In my mind I read that in the South Park "They killed Kenny!!!" voice.

Sorry but IMHO that is the absolute worst can opener design ever. I had one in my kit years ago and it never worked right.

Frustrating say the least!
