Used the thing 8 times and no probs on our trip to G canyon--then again, this was only a short trip and very minimal use. I think the Oxo rim cutter is way better.
Think I'll put this thing up on the beam in the kitchen as an "antique" never to be used again--

I tried a P38, but it made too much of a mess.

As an ex-Army guy who caught the tail end of the C ration era before the MREs were coming in, I am a P38 loyalist. Maybe I am biased but I like that the blade twists (on the lever point) towards you (at least if you are right handed). I e never liked the Swiss Army knife opener action but like I said, maybe I am biased :-)

Since I started this thread I have been using the can opener on my Leatherman exclusively for opening cans at work. I eat canned fish three times a week, tuna or salmon, as a morning snack. I also eat canned chili occasionally for lunch.

Based on this extensive research I think the old school "Hawk Bill" type can opener is a very viable option for the perfect camping can opener.

Cons:
A little more work although this is debatable.
You need to practice to get efficient.
Cave man image.

Pros:
Zero, zip, nada moving parts to fail.
Just as fast, once you get it down.
Cool factor.
If your multi tool already has one nothing extra to carry.

When camping the best option for certain food items is often canned.
Back in the day I always used the Echo combo can opener/ bottle opener. Multi-taskers rule.
Over the past 10 years I have notice this brand has turned to crap.
My new fav is the Swing a way I picked one up at the local restaurant supply place and it rocks.

What is everyone else using?

I always used whatever can opener i happened to have... Since camping with my wife for the past few years, we've have only used a can opener once (on the trip we did last week) she never uses canned anything out in the field (that trip was a fluke, it was a rush packing job and she wanted baked beans).

Bottle opener: my Swiss Army knife, my Gerber multi-tool, etc. There always seems to be a few in our gear (none of them dedicated for the job though)
