Can a de-smoged FJ60 2F run a catalytic converter?

Reviving.... stink like oil? My rebuilt engine has a City Racer carb and I recently pulled my pan worried something was up. I have an extra and it was a plan at some point anyhow. I have no smoke w/ start up or driving but while driving the truck stinks bad.
I am desmoged and have no cat, that’s the reason?
I will add when I got up high and looked down on the passenger side I noticed my CC solenoid was unplugged but that’s only for shut down correct?

Like Seth said, it has a distinctive rotten egg, or sulfur smell, with the cat. You don’t have a cat so I don’t know if the smell would be the same.

Regarding your cc, if unplugged, it’s like the car is off and the solenoid is open all the time, even when running. I was trying to think of the implications of this and maybe others can add some information but at the very least, gases from the tank will migrate to the carb vent instead of the cc when running, and I guess depending on how the check balls work in the canister (I haven’t gotten that figured out but would like to know) other gases could enter your carb with it on all the time. Did the smell stop when you plugged it back together? When I smell oil it’s always been from a leak somewhere that is burning on the exhaust manifold or pipe.

For a visual check just put an old hollowed out cat on there. Or make it look even more convincing by mounting an old O2 sensor in the pipe before and after it with the wires going nowhere but with ends hidden.

So F, some questions.

No cat so no concern of rotting eggs there.

You smell burn oil, out of the tailpipe or in general?
Who did the rebuild? What was done engine and head?

If out of the tailpipe, simply you are burning oil. Might be a small bit but you are burning oil. It could be that from the rebuild the tolerances are a little less than a new engine.

If not from the tailpipe and you smell burning oil, I would look everywhere for leaks. It may be small but when oil get hot it reeks and you notice like right now.

I don’t want to hold up this thread for my desmoged-minus cat-stinky-oil-scented-while-driving (in general)-rebuilt-head-60 so I can simply go back to my build thread or begin a new one....
Tolerances are less so valves, springs? Are you suggesting I do another valve adjustment or at minimum check the gaps? Right now oil pan is off so no running the truck till its all buttoned back up. Could be a few days to a week.

No I am talking about rings, valve seals/ seats etc. Really it should all be ok and is more a shot in the dark. But if it is coming from the tailpipe it normally is an internal engine issue. If this was a Diesel, then I would have said it is normal, but being gas and not a British vehicle (if you do not small oil or see it on the drive, then it is out). If you are not burning oil that you can see then I would not be to concerned.
If you suddenly are then I would be.

When was it rebuilt? Any warranty? Take it back to the shop that did it.

New valve seals I supplied. New valves and seats reground. Rings not touched hence one reason I decided to pull the pan, to get a good look up there.
I’m not burning oil. Plugs all look pretty good esp post rebuild.

Kind of a stupid question, but did you change the PCV valve?

Either way if you are smelling burnt oil, it is either coming off an oil leak that is hitting the exhaust or something else hot and you are thinking it is coming out of the tail pipe, or if really out of the tailpipe, you could have some seepage off one of the wiper rings.
I would keep an eye on it, but as it sounds like you did the top end and not the bottom end, it could be the cause. If it is a small seepage, it will smell but burn off and thus not on the plug. If bad you will see fouling and smoke.

This is my experience anyways based on V8's, 4 bangers and a few Ford straight 6's. There is the possibility the 60 series engine has something that is unique to it. Looking at the nightmare cooling on these things that is a huge possibility.
