Cam's FJ60 Gets Sprung

...And where's the line for the airlocker?

It met an untimely death during the build when it made contact with the angle grinder, so I have to run a new one.

I'm dropping off my front third today to get the ARB installed. I'll plumb them both at the same time.

I was skeptical of the 866's, but I'm a believer now, at least for my application. The rear came up an inch from the stock height springs. If you're following along, the 866s dropped me 1" from the 863s, but are a little softer unloaded. But not as soft as the OME stock height (862).

I think I'm going to try the OME medium fronts. I think it will yield the same lift that I have now, but will be a little firmer and I can lose the spacer. It's costing me about $30-40 to try a pair of springs, by the time I sell & ship the ones that don't work. Worth it to me.

Did the transmission or transfer case change from the '93s to the '97s?

I swear I measured Mark's rear driveshaft (97) and it matched my (modified for engine swap) rear shaft exactly. However the donor '93 rear shaft is 3-1/2" too long.

I thought I had an easy spare, but it looks like I'll need to have it shortened.

Tranny was different. I thought DS was the same. Ask beno

If you need more weight later on Cam then Slee Heavy is same height as 866 but handle more lbs.

The only Slee heavies I found on their site is for a 4" lift (on an 80 series, but sold as 2.5" heavy for the 100). I think that would translate to a 7" or more lift on mine.

So far, of the springs I've tried:
863 gave me 6"
862 (stock height) - 4"
866 - 5"

I thought the transmission changed....

I'll measure Mark's 80 the next time he stops by. I probably need a 93 front and 97 rear shaft.

post up how the parking/emergency brake works, really interested on how it functions to hold the truck on a steep slope as one encounters or can encounter off-road.

Slee heavies are inch shorter than 863 in real life. So it looks put them in 866 height with 863 weight rating.

Cool, I'll load these puppies up and see how they perform.

I had the 863's loaded up with 400 additional lbs and they just barely softened up.

Trans changed in 95 I think. Full hydraulic to electric controls. Driveshafts in earlier models are longer I think by a few inches, can't remember for sure. I think it is 91-94 and 95-97.

We are very close to calling this project done. I got the front axle rebuilt this weekend and slid in the ARB locked diff. I forgot how much of a pain in the ass this is. Very glad to have it behind me.

I'm also trying out some OME medium front springs for the fun of it. I'm happy with the rears so far.

All new bearings, knuckles & wheels...

Here's the new diff with the multi drilled flange (w/ shiny new nuts & bolts!) and the blue line coming out. I also got a new u-joint for the 80 series end, and got the donor 80 rear drive shaft cut down to size & balanced with new u-joints. It had tighter splines (my old had a little slop), so I'm going to run that one and keep my old for a spare.

Only things left are to plumb the rear locker & rear diff breather and adjust the ebrake cable.

do you have a remote tank for your air setup, if so where did you mount the tank?

No remote tank. Just the tiny air manifold plumbed to the compressor.

F@WK YEAH!!!

I have found the Goldilocks front springs! OME 851 mediums. They are not the same rate as the heavies as advertised everywhere. They are softer. In between the two rates of the 861s. Same height as the 861 + 1" spacer. Perfect for this project. Just soft enough for DD duty, but should still work fine loaded down. They are yielding about a 4" lift for me.

The springs combined with fresh parts up front has significantly tightened up the front. I never imagined a 60 could feel like this.

Only the body squeaks and rattles remain.

I'm psyched. I feel like I have finally achieved what I had in mind. This was the last piece of the puzzle.

's for everybody!
