Cam's FJ60 Gets Sprung

The crossmember & buckets weren't going in last night, so I took the opportunity to clean them up & pre-paint since some of it will be hard to reach (masked off the edges for welding).

I need to cut the coil mounts off the axle and move them inboard, but my 4-1/2" plasma just doesn't quite have the reach. So that didn't happen.

I'll buy a 5" disc (if it'll mount on a 4.5) and that should do it.

The frame is cleaned and prepped to weld, so as soon as the lower bucket mounts get moved, we can set 'er on the springs and see how it sits.

Hell I hope he will post a pic of the badass dinning table he made from the old fence!

Thanks!

I'll post some pics since it is relevant to the thread. I built this for Mrs. FJ60Cam so I could put some political capital in the bank, which I've spent several times over on the suspension.

These are rough cut 5/4" cypress boards from a fence we took down.

As you can see, it too was conceived in the carport. (The neighbors rarely see working vehicles parked in there.)

Painted, then rubbed w/stain...

(She's still looking for the right chairs, these are just some we had.)

Cam's got skills. Lots of skills.

Back to the carport...

We left off needing bigger grinding & cutoff discs to get the lower buckets off the axle.

I got an assortment of 5 & 6 inchers to run on my 4-1-2" plasma cutter. This means running without the safety guard, but sometimes you have to get 'r dun.

I skipped lunch today to spend a few minutes in the carport and was able to get the mounts off.

They need to slide inboard to match the width of the 60 frame, which is what you see in the pics.

This was the last obstacle to putting the rear back together. I took a needed rest last night, but plan on hanging out in my welding shorts tonight.

Using the grinder without a guard makes me paranoid as hell. I've heard stories about cutoff wheels exploding and the resulting trips to the ER. I've never had one explode myself, but the thought is there when there's no protection between it and your pretty face.

Well, I went to make one laaaaast cut before quitting, just a little trim...and, BOOM!

Luckily, the disc was worn down to almost nothing and injury was avoided :steer:

go support your local hardware store and get one of these for $15, wayyyy cheaper than an amberlamps ride. When those disc self destruct, clothing will usually stop 'em. But the tender carotid is easy game.

Don't know. With Cam's face, I might save the $15.

I didn't have it by my face or even in line with my face when it happened, but it seemed funny to me that Murphy waited for me to take the guard off to explode one.

Amazon has one on the way. It would have been nice to have several times on this build when underneath and there's no way to remove stuff without a face full of sparks and grit. And I still need to whittle on the FF axle that will go in permanently.

Rear crossmember in. Buckets next.

The exhaust is the perfect height, it just needs to scoot over toward the center a little...
