I have a friend in town from Spain and we will be taking a short & quick trip up to the Sierra’s next week to show him the sights. I will be heading up 395 and will cut across Tioga Pass to do Yosemite and the Sequoias and head back on the 99/5. I will try to do a little wheeling, but basically this will be sightseeing for the Spaniard.

Does anyone know of any campgrounds (preferably primitive) outside the Yosemite Valley that might have availability this time of year? I know there are some sites along the Tioga Pass, but was hoping to get a little closer. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks.

Mark,

If you are going in from Tioga Pass there is a nice primitive camp a few miles past Tuolumne Meadows called Porcupine Creek. Stayed there once and loved it. Nice meadow a quarter of mile or less from camp. If I remember right, you will need to stop in at Tuolumne Meadows to check for space. Nowhere near as crowed as the valley.

Jerry, I will check it out. Hopefully as a primative camp it won't be full. I see there are a few campgrounds along the Tioga Pass, so that area looks like a good option if we can find an open site.

Check out my thread on Shuteye Peak near Bass Lake. It's about 15 miles outside the west entrance to Yosemite off the 41. I have a couple links for some campgrounds in the thread that you will drive by on the way up to the peak.

Derrick, I like to book you purchased. How long is the trail to Shuteye Peak? I will definitly be doing a few of the trails in the book.

About 12 miles long, the first part is smooth fire road with only the last 2 miles or so being a jeep trail. The view is what makes it worth it and the lookout tower welcomes visitors.

The campgrounds are right next to a creek so I imagine there is some good trout fishing.

If you enjoy beer be sure to stock up with a stop into the Indian Wells Brewery on Hwy 14 just South of where the 14 & 395 join up.

And yes affiliated.... :)
