Considering a 100 but curious about 4-speed vs 5-speed

Looks like in 2003 they went to a 5-speed auto and was just curious whether its worth trying to get one with the 5-speed over the 4-speed as far as power and fuel economy since this truck would double as the family hauler.

I am torn between a used 100 and a less used and more expensive 2010+ 4Runner.

thoughts appreciated. thanks.

I would definitely suggest the 5 speed.... Especially if you live and drive anywhere near mountains.

Thanks. Is it that noticeable of a difference?

I would assume the gearing is different between the two making them both smooth but is it really only on the hills where you would notice the difference? How about on level highway and fuel economy? Also, could the tranny be part of why the 2003+ seem to hold their value a little more?

1st gear is lower and 5th gear is higher. Vehicle will accelerate faster from a stop and give slightly better fuel mileage on the highway. 5sp is the major difference but there are many mechanical and cosmetic changes in the '03 MY including std curtain airbags on the LX, optional on the LC.

ok so it sounds like i might as well try to go for the 5 speed if possible

Ideally, I'd like to find a 03-04 LC with <150k miles on it for ~$10-15k. How doable is this? Otherwise, it seems like springing an extra $5-10k could get me into a used 2010+ 4Runner, which is a pretty nice ride as well. Keep in mind that I will not be doing any hardcore trail duty unless something drastic changes like my wife and kids all of a sudden fiend for hardcore trail duty.

Im guessing you have better odds winning the local lottery

So how far off am i really? I figured another 30k miles might be worth a 2-3k reduction in price.

I'd definitely check it out in person. I don't think that price point is typical for something you'd want to actually own. The 5 speed is a big part of the price jump in the 03 and newer ones. As far as getting one for 15 -- highly unlikely regardless of miles if the truck has been taken care of, IMHO.

I just bought a 2000 LC with 78K miles and belt/pump done at 70k. Black, tan leather, rear ac, the works, excellent shape, driven less than 7k per year and one owner: I paid $16,500 from a dealer.

FYI

Hello,

I am considering purchasing a 2000 LC with 86,000 miles on it. it has not had the 90K service done yet. The asking price is 19,990. Trade on the truck is 13,800 and PP value is 16485. Retail is 19135 according to KBB. I was told the 90K service could be completed for 450.00 although I don't know yet is included in that service. I want the timing belt and water pump changed. My question is what would be a fair offer?

keep looking, they're out there!

P.S. My first post! Just went from an 80 to a 100!

Man, you guys are lucky, at least you have some choice. I have been searching for a LC100 north of the border for almost a year but no luck so far. First casually, but now that I have sold my classic car and (almost) sold my truck I need to speed up things.

They were never officially imported in Canada, only as LX. But if possible I'd prefer a LC, unless I find a way to de-pimp a LX.

Anyway, (nationwide!) I have found 3 LC's: one in British Colombia, one in Alberta and one in Nove Scotia, basically all thousands of miles away. Not to mention it would be nearly impossible to inspect the vehicles, getting it here and the extra pain to get one licenced in Ontario.

Question: The last one (in NS) has a factory TRD package. I tried to research it but I can't seem to find anything. Do you know what that is? Is it a factory 4.5 supercharger?

I need some reassurance here. I found a 2005 LX 470 with 55K miles, single owner with just about every recommended maintenance done to it. It looks to be in great shape but I have to drive a few hours to check it out. In general, how reliable is a 7 year old LC/LX in this condition? This will be my wife's daily driver for a while, and honestly she's only going to put 3-4k on it in the next year.

DeltaT, have you compared the cost of importing one from the US? Obviously a much better selection.... and most are rust-free too. There was no TRD package for the 100. That's just a sticker.

Yes, I have. But I haven't found 'the ultimate' LC yet. Maybe I am looking in the wrong places. And I noticed that pricing isn't that much different if I compare the Canadian available LX (like this one) with a US Land Cruiser (like this one).
Each their own, but I can't get over all the chrome, the spoiler and plastic cladding of an LX. I really prefer the clean and low profile look of a LC but like I said, I can't find a decent one. I could try and de-pimp an LX but I feel that I would be compromising.

If I find one in the US, I will have to add temp. insurance, transport, duty and fees. Then it probably needs to meet Canadian safety standards etc.. I also need to pay 13% Ontario HST (tax). If you add it all up it could all be out of my price range.
And I will also have to factor in that in my specific situation I would not be able to do everything myself. I would have to get a broker or something, which also costs extra.
My budget would be 30k for a clean '04 and up LC.

So you are telling me that this guy is BS'ing when he says it is a factory TRD 100. Well whadayaknow.

Perhaps but i can't say for sure since it is actually pretty far away from me.

so it sounds like maybe i should set my sights a little lower at say a 2001+ with under 150k miles for ~$15k. Any thoughts on whether a 2010+ 4Runner might be the better choice for a bit more money? I realize this is a 100 series fan site but thought i'd ask anyway. Something just tells me that many of the folks here might actually consider something like a 2010+ 4Runner or FJ over a 2008+ LC.

I really think something is fishy with this... Maybe not but that is really cheap! I thought I was doing good with my 2000 LX470 w/ 113k for $13,000...

Theoretical question here. If you needed more room, would you trade a 2010 4Runner 4WD with 36K miles in for a 2005 Lx 470 with 56K miles in excellent shape/full service history?
