Good advice , thanks .

Is it possible the truck rides rougher with the bumper installed because of my springs ?

Definitely. When I first got the BIOR my springs could not at all handle the weight. So being cheap, I added spacers....still awful. Threw out the lot and bought some springs rated for the weight (Tourflex red springs from Trail Tailor), and now it's great.

Update on my rear bumper.

I was able to save the welded nuts in the frame which is a relief, so far so good. Seems like a lot of crap collects in the frame and that caused the weld to break. I was able to run a tap ( M14 x 1.5 ) through all of those holes.

Dropping the bumper off at the powder coater next. They claim they will strip it down, zinc paint prime it, and then powder it for around $350, seems worth it.

Pictures below show the inside of the frame and bumper rust.

>> Would it be crazy to park on an incline and let the garden hose run in the frame with the hopes of flushing all that mud out or will I make things worse?

Flush it for sure. Get all the road salt and mud out of there.

What do we think the rear bumper with a tire adds for weight ? Approx 200lbs?

Looks like I have the OME 2865 light / medium duty springs , says their rated for approx 250+lbs over stock. Seems like that would be good enough for this setup.

Hoping I can avoid having to beef up the springs any more.

That's what I had also, but I run a set of drawers and a fridge in the cargo area also. Maybe that's the difference?

I've got the SS1 platform and drawers adding more weight to the mix, but I removed them recently for unrelated matters and but it was still a rough ride. I've gotta imagine the OME2865 are good enough but not sure.

I'll have to install the bumper again , keep it centered and see how it goes.

re: springs- with bumper and tire carrier, I think with OME the 2863 would be the minimum requirement, 2864 if you have drawers, gear, or RTT.

Anyway bumper shouldn’t be making contact with the body, rattling or generally making noise: check that the swing out bearings are tight & greased, the locking pins fully extend into the bumper and that the spring and shank are lubed and that knurled adjusting nut is tight. And the latches are snug.

I think getting all the bolts tightened to factory specs is key in a specific order: frame bolts then wing supports then the two bolts by the receiver.

Do a little homework on powder coat types to make sure you get a durable finish for where you live-

Thanks for the advice.

I've got the bumper taken apart to get re-coated. They will do a base layer of zinc paint and then re-powder.

This will allow me to put everything back together, make sure it's all tight, and then center the bumper properly. If the rough ride and noises return I think it will be time to beef up the springs.

All and all the bumper is still solid and it sounds like other people had better luck with their powder coat so I still give this bumper a good rating.

>> Anyone else out there running the OME light/medium 2865 with the BIO rear bumper? If so does it ride nice or do you also think you need heavier springs?

Not sure about BIOR rear bumper but it looks like the SLEE rear bumper weighs 250lbs before the whee/tire.
Gotcha, It sounds like I need to beef up my springs at some point if I want to get my ride quality back.

Between the bumper, spare tire, max trax, and the occasional gas can or two, it's gotta be at least 300lbs. My fear is adding heavier springs would make my ride even more stiff. I would think the 2865s I have installed would be good enough though.

>> Anyone else out there have BIO rear + OEM 2865 light/emdium duty springs?

>> Since heavier springs will add a bit more lift can my shocks accommodate this or do I need to upgrade as well? I currently run the FOX 2.0 but I kind of want to go back to Toyota OEM at some point.

What does one have to do if those nuts are in the frame rails crooked to the point that you cant thread the bolt in? Came across this when trying to mount a hitch
I had 4 on each side, with my factory installed hitch only using 3. Certainly running a tap through was a good idea, possibly new bolts too (Ace Hardware).

I had one that was not lined up anymore and couldn't quite get it, so my bumper is held on with 7 bolts on the bottom and 6 on inside frame rails (4x4 labs not BIOR).

My local Ace didnt have the right size. Do you remember what size tap is needed? That sounds like it would help me as the bolts do go in a little and then they stop.

Ace doesn't seem to go above M12, you need to try Fastenal or online order.

You need a M14x1.5 to run a tap through those welded nuts. This applies for my 2002 LC and I assume every 100 series is the same. Just hold the tap up to the bolt to make sure it's the right pitch and size.

Spray a little PB blaster in the hole, go slowly, and every few turns, reverse and back out a little to help clear any crud in there.

Thanks for the help guys. I hope to be ordering my BIOR rear bumper sometime this year.

Back to the bumper though, I have 2 rotopax already for gas currently on the roof so I wasnt going to get a jerry can holder, originally I was thinking of getting both a tire and a ladder swingarm. To those of you who got the ladder does it get a lot of use? Wondering if I should just get a tire swingarm only, maybe even a centered one.

This exactly. Same on a 2000. Your standard Tap sets won't have M14x1.5 I bought this one on amazon:

Amazon product ASIN B07G9ZX2J7
which also doesn't fit with my hand tap drivers, but i was able to push it through by hand.

My ace did have M14's but they are variable

Without a tap holder or square socket you can also improvise with a 12 point socket, I think a 9/16 12 point worked for my particular tap. I was worried about buying the amazon tap since I have broken many in the past, but I am sure it will work to just clean up some threads.

If your looking to get a full set, harbor cheapo also has a metric set with some bigger options.

I used that tap on the frame bolts and it worked great. I went slow and used some cutting oil.

I might have to add that HF set to my other HF set. Now that I have a tap and die set I wonder how I lived without one before.
