A series of shots of the Phantom, after a bit of a wash and scrub. Some fittings (the indicators, the rear wheel, the full doors, etc) are still getting their coat of primer. But most of the other items are back on the body.

And I never thought I'd see anything "dwarf" a Range Rover!

damn good job!

Some Futuristics

Ok...so I've had the Phantom at home for a couple of days. Whilst it's somewhat difficult to be objective, when you're assessing a project so close to your heart, one of the things that this rig is seriously lacking is on board entertainment. Which got me to thinking.

This page also serves as a scrapbook of sorts; a place for ideas and random flights of fantasy to be jotted down, and stored away for further reference. This is very much one of those "Dear Diary" posts. :)

Now the FJ40's basic design does NOT lend itself to many creature comforts. It never has, ab initio. But does that truly mean that we have to deny ourselves these if they can be incorporated into such a build? Personally, I don't think so. I mean...we DO opt for power steering, and air-conditioning, and heating...yes? Why not hi-fidelity sound?

I like my music. Rock, heavy metal, jazz, bluegrass, techno, trance, R&B, pop, disco, opera...the works. I also like being aware of where I am, in the GPS and GPS-assisted manner of speaking. Yet another thing which I dare say is becoming de rigeur nowadays, is communications...mobile telephony. I want something that incorporates all of these things.

Fortunately (although this wasn't the intent, at the outset), the inner roll cage of the Phantom provides three very sturdy lateral mounting positions for sound boxes. The front one (at the A-Pillar position) could very well mount an iPad, an amplifier, and two mid-range speakers, along with a pair of tweeters. The iPad could become the music repository and the GPS and the video player, all in one. Depending upon the design of the roof-mounted unit, the iPad might also become the on board "flight recorder" by being able to record video of the movements of the beast. By incorporating a WiFi modem, it could also imply that you have an on board internet hotspot (invaluable for improving GPS efficiency, AND posting live content on ih8mud, in real time! ;)). In tandem with a bluetooth mobile phone hands-free unit, this could also enable voice communication on the go. All of it enclosed in a well-fabricated, beautifully-appointed, great looking "heads up display".

The centre roll-bar (at the B-Pillar position) could incorporate a bass unit, and a central speaker...something to give it a little punch (which would certainly be required over the bellow of the smokestack exhaust!). Perhaps it could have ducts to incorporate a dual AC/heater for the rear passengers.

The rear roll-bar (at the C-Pillar position) might again incorporate two large mid-range speakers, so as to truly make the audio experience in this ride, a surround sound affair.

Add-ons like the amplifier etcetera, would be bunged under the rear seats. When the vehicle is going topless / naked, the entire arrangement could be clad in waterproof / dustproof "jackets", and stay free from harmful effects of the environment.

7.1 Channel speakers, GPS, mobile hands free voice, WiFi, video playback and recording...AND the ability to yak on the Forums, while you're extreme-wheeling...

I am SO doing this. :D

Ok...so maybe I was being a mite facetious, when I mentioned accessing the 'Mud Forums while stuck in a bog...

I mean...I'm not THAT addicted, yet. Maybe. Perhaps. Kinda sorta.

If you keep it flat black and with a name like Phantom, Batman may need its services someday :D

Hahaha. Batman would need this rig - so badass!

Love the e-connectability and the copious amounts of great ideas in this build!

Kenwood makes a head unit that allows AM/FM, stereo bluetooth, GPS, rear view camera, etc.....

Might be the way to go for you.

That is what I will be doing in my BJ-44 and my FJ-55.

Best,

T

LOL.

Yeah! I mean...SOME of Batman's exploits HAVE to take him to the mud-runs and rock-climbs outside of Gotham City...right?! :D

Thanks for the info, T. I've seen a couple of really cool stereos (double DIN fittings) that offer such facilities, and Kenwood (along with Alpine and Pioneer) is pretty much at the top of the heap when it comes to in-car entertainment.

The iPad idea is one that I've already used (albeit, in a much less radical manner) in my FZJ79. It enables you to have all your music and videos on board (without the need for external storage devices), packs some awesome GPS apps, permits video recording, and allows you to browse the web (for those "help...I'm stranded" emails, sending your precise location to someone, or even online troubleshooting a techie problem), all at the same time. I am using it in the FZJ79, in tandem with such a head unit that you mentioned, for bluetooth connectivity with my phone.

Of course, an alternative to this is using an iPhone, instead...which can pack all the features (in fact MORE), and not take up much space, either.

Let's see how this thing turns out.

Got a model number / web address for the Kenwood head unit you mentioned, mate?

Fouad.

One of the few vehicles that could pull up next to an H1 and make it look soft! I want to see it with the black hard doors on. Looks great!

I have been reading your thread daily and not posting.

Honestly, I have grown to love the bare metal rusty look on your truck. I think your truck would be well served with a Faux-rusty paint job with a Camel or taricotta leatherette interior. I think that would be deserving of that beast. Do you have anyone that is an artisan with an air brush? I could see rust runs dripping off the Phantom logo.

Cheers

Thanks for the kind words, mate!

As for pictures of it with the full doors...all in good time. A couple of days, max.

WOW!

What incredible artwork! Those photos are truly masterpieces.

Unfortunately though, airbrush artwork is one of those few custom-build areas that is VERY poor in Pakistan. To the extent, that when I thought of painting flames (and an Angel/Devil "tattoo") on my 65 Impala, I had to do so myself, for the simple reason that no painter was ready to take such a risk! Neither, were they accustomed to such demands being made of them. In the end, I simply hired his hardware off him, and did the job as a DIY project.

Soooo...if a paint job like the ones you posted is to become a reality...I'm going to have to do it on my own :D.

And thus...the plot thickens...

I remember first seeing your original post. Then hadn't been back in this section. Awesomeness. Just read it all. Amazing about your country. I agree news doesn't put the majestic side into view.

I vote for a rusty paint job. I thought a couple of pictures that it was actually paint. . Awesome. :)

Hi Fouad, this is the color I recommend for your "Phantom" it's called "Volcanic"
by ICON previewed on a FJ44, here's their web link:

It's an amazing looking color, IMHO, which is accentuated by the black wheels and soft-top, even the interior looks good in Volcanic paint. Just my 2 cents worth.

Very impressive build. Read the whole thread, a lot of thought and work went into a very short time. The only question I have is, how you get that big O tire down from the bed and back on in an emergency? Also like the engine in your impala.

Im with the airbrush rust color vote - I like what youve done...but there was something seriously eye catching about the burnt rough orange patina look...it just looks natural on a 40..with everything else youve done - Id have no doubt you can figure out something - and probably succeed with style, which seems to be your habit...in the end - its yours!

I cant wait to see what you do next!!
