Thats my focus, I've only read that crawl article half a dozen times. He kept everything stock except the axles. Would also like to meet up with him and see it in person when I'm in TN.

Axles off of these. Unimog is the iron horse of Mercedes and very capable off road as well. I hope to one day build one and have tons of info on them if you're interested.
