Need help from all 80 series legends
Looking to upgrade the brake disk and all for a better braking response on my 80 series by any chance has anyone did it. As I’m finding it hard to find the kit that fits.
Thanks in advance

Upgrading the booster is the first place to start. You can go with a bigger vacuum booster or hydroboost. Hydraulic Brake Booster Upgrade - LandCruiser 80 | Marks 4WD - https://www.marks4wd.com/hydro-brake-booster-landcruiser-80-2-bolt.html/?srsltid=AfmBOooY0v4lD546byKlJC9OcbiG_jZ1C7uSdNytxT6v39vzgF-cb-vs#

Pressure, surface area, friction coefficient.

Pressure = more pressure means more clamping force.

Can look into a retrofit for hydroboost but not a simple upgrade, new Hydrobooster, mastercylinder, power steering reservoir, cooler etc.

Surface area = more piston surface area means more clamping force.

The 80 has 6650mm2 of piston surface area. You can look at expensive aftermarket options but make sure they have a combined caliper piston surface area greater than this.

The 2015+ 4Runner calipers use the same 1” MC bore but have about 10% more surface area with their large 48mm pistons. They are almost a direct bolt on but I think they require a 17” wheel.

Friction Coefficient = more braking torque

Buy better pads like a performance pad. The key is to get a good track or performance pad that has good cold bite. Hey high coefficient at low temps. These usually are categorized as high end street compounds or low end performance/track compounds.

They key is low temp high coefficient. A high coefficient is going to be useless for the 80 if the pad needs to be running hot all of the time.

Building on my 16” wheel brake upgrade I’ve designed and upgraded brake setup for a 17”wheel.

It uses larger Toyota calibers from a Land Cruiser. 14 x 1.25 rotors and includes properly sized dust shields.

Currently waiting on the delivery of the rotor hats and caliper brackets. This is a bolt on solution.

Should be able to have a working setup by Christmas.

You could get some nice quality rotors and pads which are the same OEM size but with better qualities.
EBC and Power Stop would be something to look at.

I am going to link some options here to consider.

17" wheels would open up more options.

100 series pads which are slightly larger than the 80 ones fit well however they tend to ride a little bit outside the rotors.

Otherwise consider the options posted before me.

This kit will be back in stock later this week. I believe it's the simplest, lowest cost upgrade you can do to get excellent braking in an 80 series.

A 2005-2010 SD Hydroboost unit is around $90 delivered on Ebay.

Haven't been on Mud in a minute, but saw this post after looking online to source (reasonably) a new brake-booster for my 80. Are there any vids available to show the application (Ford hydroboost on an 80)? I'm an old knuckle-dragger who needs visuals to function. Thanks!

These are the bare essential parts you won't source locally to hydroboost your 80 brakes.

I hope to get a "stage 2" kit together for the 1fz 80's that includes everything needed later this year. I feel that will then be the time to do some videos showing how they go in and plumb.

The basic kits come with instructions with lots of pictures showing how they install. Just no lines or fittings yet. That will come later when we can get a 1zf cruiser in the shop to make the lines.

Nice man. I didn’t know you sold that. I’ll be a buyer!

Excited for this. Having the right hoses and fittings limits the vehicle downtime, which is always a plus.

@PIP Do you provide a parts list with the kit?

Also, I noticed that many of the ebay SD Hydroboost units come with the Ford master cylinder included. Would that one work, or do I need to put the Toyota one back on?
