One of the calipers on my '86 4Runner decided to give up the ghost and needs a re-build. I'm considering upgrading to the '88-'92 V6 Calipers. I've read this post, V6 Calipers on a '90 4Runner , which discusses the upgrade on a '90. Since my truck is an '86, I have a few questions:

1. Will these calipers work on my truck?
2. Do I need to upgrade to V6 rotors?
3. Will I have clearance issues with my stock DLX steel wheels?

Thanks, Ken

the calipers will bolt up

call a parts house and check if the v6 and 4cyl rotor have the same part number. if the are different, you need to swap rotors too.

wheel clearance? well at least you are asking all the right questions. I dont know. i assume they would be fine. but you know what they say about assumptions...

I'll bet the wheels fit. It's the solid axle steel wheels that don't clear the V6 calipers.

or a small, over the stud spacer. I can't imagine them being that much off...

Yup, the only issue you will have is you'll probably have to trim the dust shields a little to get the calipers to fit.

I've done this upgrade and it did help some. But what really helped was also upgrading to a 1" MC and brake booster from a V6 truck.

Thanks for the info. I'm planning on that upgrade later. But since my existing calipers need work now, I figure that I might as well upgrade.

What did you use to trim the shields?

I used my cut-off tool, I actually trimmed mine way back to expose the rotors. I kept getting rocks stuck inside them. Before and after:

intresting mod, i am in the process of doing a solid axle swap in my 4runner. I am installing my old V6 calipers onto the solid axle in place of what ever was there. My calipers are off of a 94 model, they are pretty big, 4 pistons. My jeep only has single piston calipers.
Anyways....I trimmed my dust shields with a cut off wheel, not too much has to come off to make a good fit. One thing i am pretty shure of is that you cannot just get rid of the dust shield, it needs to be in there to have proper spacing of the spindle assembly. You could just get rid of all the material around the flange portion. I am not sure what you want to do there. I have some pictures that might be of help to you.
Sorry the picture orientation dosent match...
