If it's running good, then you are probably close to where you need to be, if it's running bad, then you are not... :D Sounds like you found a big issue... If it was all the way at the end of the notch, then it was way off for sure... (Assuming the valve timing and distributor are in the correctly...)

;)good show........is it pinging at all, keep your eye on the temp guage
Okay as an experiment I went out and started the truck and then loosened the nut on the distributor. It was originally rotated all the way clockwise. I slowly brought it counter clock wise and noticed a HUGE difference in the way the motor sounded, the smoothness, and the overall quality of the sounds was better.

Is it really that simple? I moved it a little bit and locked it in and the truck is like a new rig. Any precautions to take when doing this sans timing gun?

There was no ping at all I actually advanced it all the way just to see if I could a point where it was diminishing and I never found it so I just backed it down where it sounded comfortable.

Now I have another issue that surfaced last week. It won't start everytime. It started right up prior to last week and then it wouldn't start up at all. I put some gas in the tank, it started right up today. Adjusted the time and it ran great. Shut it off and now it won't start back up. I even put the distributor back were it was originally with no change in starting.

It has spark and air. And the tank has fuel. I'm wondering if it might be the pump. Is it an external fuel pump or in tank?

Pump is in the tank. Take a paper clip, stick it across the Fp and B+ contacts in the diagnostic connector, then turn the key on (engine not running), you should be able to hear the pump running if you stand by the filler, and hear fuel hissing thru the fuel rail.

I will definitely do that when I get home. I sure hope it isn't the pump.

You can be loosing pressure too.

...or you have an afm that is sticking or not relaying signal to the pump.

Well went out an did the paper clip trick and the pump works. And the truck started right up too.

Where should a healthy 22re idle when warm, rpm-wise?

I've noticed it in both conditions. I had it started pulled into my driveway shut it off and tried to restate it a few minutes later, no dice. Another time it hadn't been started in a couple days.

It turns over and sparks and it has no air blockages, so I'm betting it is either a pressure problem or as 2d gen said, a relay from the afm(or other vital system).
