I will give you guys something to chew on while I am struggling up to Mammoth with 5 guys and 5 boards on top of the Cruza to Mammoth. With what I hope won't be a head wind to boot!

Anyway back to Bone Head of the Month, back at my first real job that being the desk job after being a Smoothie Engineer. We had a thing at our monthly meeting where we would secretly nominate people for the Bone Head of the Month and at the end of the meeting the group would take a vote and the winner would be awarded a gold painted dog bone neckless that they would have to wear the following three Fridays.

So anyway I would like to see if anyone could top me for this month.

CO2 Install

OK so I finally made some free time on a Friday afternoon since I get out of work at noon now a days and I decided I was going to finally mount my CO2 bottle that I got for Christmas from the :princess:.

This was going to be a fun little mod I could get done before the Project list on Saturday and the Wild Flower Wheeling Trip on Sunday.

So I carefully marked off the location for the bracket so that I could still put in the third row seat and still use the stock tie down.

Then I drilled the holes for the bolts. Little did I know I had just screwed up twice.

I decided to use some Grade 8 washer & nuts that were going to be exposed to the elements on the underside.

Since the flooring was un-even I just grabbed a back of plane old washers to put under the mounting plate to keep it level.

So once under the truck I immediately notice that one of the bolts isn't showing up. Well if you refer back to the first two pics you will see I went just South of the seam and it is behind the sheet metal cross member. So I was so fixated on this issue I didn't notice how close the other rear bolt was to the wire harness.
IMG_0236.jpg

So the one bolt I was fixated on I left the hole for the bolt tight and didn't wiggle the drill bit around like I did for the other so the bolt would drop right in. So I went and picked up a new bolt with an allen wrench hole in the top so I could screw it in tight since I couldn't put a washer & nut on the bottom side.

I added some cork to the bottom to help reduce some rattle and I thought I was done.

WRONG!

I get into the truck and I push the brake to start it up and the ring around the revers 'R' lights up on the dash as well as two of the AC controls. Huh that was weird. :meh: I get to the end of the alley way to bring the truck around front and I push the brake again and the 'R' lights up again. I immediately pop the picture up in my head of the bolt just above the wire harness. :o
So I park the truck crawl under and fell the top of the harness with my finger and sure enough I got it. The sun had just set so I figured I would tape up a couple wires in the morning.

Until I uncover this in the morning!

Out of twenty of the wires I mangled 10 of them.

So 3 hours later I got this

And now I found a guy parting out a 96 on here and he is going to give me his harness for $40 so I will have a nice stock one. I LUV IH8MUD

Well, the boss with the dumb arse gold dog bone ought to be strung up for being a jackass, but Mark wins. That one is better than me breaking the rear knock sensor while replacing the PHH! At least you've got a nice clean repair until you get the replacement wiring harness. The ACD in me would have put shrink wrap over each of those butt connectors too!

Well on the bright side at least you didn't drill into your fuel tank.

When you told me this on the phone I had a picture of a few knicked wires. It looks like the drill bit really mangled those.

Yeah it was a really cool office to work at with cards at lunch then the winner at cards rolling everyone in dice to see if he collected money or not.

Anyway someone finally got their sensitive little feelers hurt and the Bone Head award was never the same.

The funny thing was that we were the corporate office. HA

Well thanks guys for thinking I am a total tool and would drill into the gas tank! I just happened to drill right were the harness was attached to the frame high and tight.

Well I am off to Mammoth, wish the Cruiser luck up the grade out of Bishop! :steer:

LOL, that is sooo something I would have done. I always somehow end up doing something stupid like this.

Sh*t happens, looks like you did a good job on the repair.

Looks familiar.

Only difference is I missed the wiring harness. :flipoff2:

I told you I was going to steel your idea. I forgot you put it under the carpet, I think I will do the same once I get some dynamat so I can apply that at the same time.

looks good Mark, I gotta do something similar for my co2 bottle as I sold the wagonrack I had in the 80 and am designing a new one, but not going to be done before I head to moab, gotta figure out a way to mount the bottle temporarily..........

Hey Noah, remember those 3rd row seat brackets I picked up from you? Here's what I used them for and just another option for your CO2 bottle.

I got this idea from a magazine article called "The Comfy Cruiser" that someone posted on here.

Wow, that sucks Mark. You got it all buttoned up and back in working order though.

Not a Cruiser related bonehead move, but I once cutout a fiberglass tub with a sawzall and cut right through a waterline, flooding the bathroom and a downstairs closet before getting the water shut off.

Hope that makes you feel a little better about your BH move.

Hows this work for you, you don't freeze over your reg with the bottle laying down?
