Its been a few years, but I finally had a chance tonight to tear down a diff I blew up in '05.

Enjoy.

Was that all one fell swoop or did that take some time?

I had around 40 miles on that front diff when it seized on me driving 50 mph in 4wd high in the desert at 5 am after a night of being broken on the trail.

good one, looks like the bearing failed first, which resulted in pinion deflection hence the ground off teeth.. maybe nobody wanted to hear that and I should shut up.

Yeah, get your "tech" outta here! We're talking about broken parts! :D Hehe

Damn, Man, Just grab a welder and weld some new teeth on that ring and pinion, and you are good to go:):):)::):):):):flipoff2::flipoff2::flipoff2:

HAHAHA DOnt even worry about shimming it in when you reinstall it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I've been sitting on a popped diff for a year but now I'm bummed. It spit out a bunch of teeth and went another 1300 miles (4x4 non-stop) but came out barely running. This one looks much more awesome :D, you win.

It sounds like you knew the trouble spot or did you change all of your fluids looking for the source of the "noise"?

I had no idea what happened. I was doing 50 mph, and the truck's engine died, and all 4 tires seized up going over some 1' whoops in the desert. After trying everything I could think of, It started to move again. I limped the next mile or two back to camp.

Next day I put the truck in 2wd, and high tailed it out to the sand dunes. When I buried the rear end, I locked it in 4wd high, only to find the truck wouldn't move.

Strapped out. Drove in 2wd back to camp. Loaded it on the trailer. Towed it home, pulled the diff, and found that.
