Yeah you're right Rick ................... kinda . I'm really a cheap skate , and it took me over 2 years to even get the clears I've got thus far . As far as wheels .. well that is far off , maybe summer .

Mind you , if I did ever wise up and do the blasted gear swap , I'd have Razor make me a big Tangerine Pearl coloured "4:88" decal for the truck ! :flipoff2:

To be honest , my ownership of my 80 , for the most part , is pretty superficial I guess . It's eye candy effect is what turns me on the most . So when it comes to tweaking it .. I tend to gravitate to going after it's appearance . Toyota reliability lies beneath this shallow vail , so I tend to ignore the guts of the matter . *shrugging*

TY - *feeling so exposed .....*

PS : Refuggly , would you believe I sold that pony to Zappa ? :flipoff2:

lc1996,

I'm thinking about going this route. How much did it cost you guys to get five rims powder coated ? Any chiping ? what should I look out for ? I have a chance to pick up a set of Lx450 rims anyone had these powder coated ? thanks in advance

Are you guys with the black OEM rims powder coating them?

Yup. In my case, I bought the Eastwood Hotcoat system for about $100. 2lbs of semi-gloss black powder was plenty to do five rims and dozens of little parts for about $25. I got a side-of-the-road oven for free and I already had a sandblaster cabinet. The center caps are painted with Plasticoat semi-gloss black paint made for plastic.

Ali's are LX rims.

I have had some chipping from wheel weights. Easy to fix. Ali has had some issues with the lug nuts rubbing off the powdercoat. I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

Had mine powder coated and rattle canned the caps to cover the bling. No chipping as of yet.

Gumby,
Very nice. yeh I just got done buying supplies to restore the center caps. Went with semi-gloss paint for plastic, going to use gold model paint for the center toyoa symbol. I don't have the space or the equipment to do the powder coating myself, gonna have a shop do it, should I have them beadblast the rims or sandblast before powdercoating. Is there diffrent levels of powder coating ? i.e. more durable ? can you post some more pics ?

Macneill,

Also very nice, did you go with flat black or semi gloss powder coat ? how long did the whole process take ?

Does anyone know if 16" 100 series rims will fit an 93 80 ? just saw a set for sale on e-bay, would be cool to have them powdercoated.

Thanks. I went with flat, but was considering either gun metal or neon green. The place I took them did all sorts of colors. The turnaround was quick, 3 days total.

I'm thinking about going with semi gloss or gun metal. Joas has a set of rims that come in gun metal very nice but very expensive. I'm going to call this place www.wheeltechniques.com, their in Santa Clara, Ca kinda close to me. apparently all the rice-rocket crew get their wheels done here and their very good. Gonna call them and get a quote on monday, I won't pay more than $60 per rim, including the bead or sand blasting and cleaning. Mcneill, Can you post some pics of your rims ?

macneill, nice rims! Please post some close-ups of your wheels. Thanks!

Not even......Not enough stud holes AND a different bolt-circle diameter.

Thanks, Cruiserdan, I didn't think so. I would really like to powdercoat the rims I have one the truck but having the truck on jackstands for 5 days in front of my house doesn't sound too appealing. TAP recycling has a set of 93 rims for $250, I'll probably buy them have them coated and then sell my existing rims. .

Navid - - if you need a set of wheels/tires for a few days, let me know. I have my oem rims and tires in my garage -- you're welcome to borrow them while you're getting your rims powdercoated.

Hit me offline if you're interested.

I wanted those JAOS rims until I found out how much they were and they didn't produce a 5 on 5.5 pattern so I thought my best option was to go ebay on LX rims. Sorta look the same. Not a big fan of JAOS stuff. Pretty cosmetic. My rear bar is mangled.
