rubber welting

According to someone else on this board, you can get a black rubber welting to replace the chrome. He said the size was 14mm or 9/16" locking strip.

does the "Toyota" emblem on the grill come off, or do you have to tape it up?

while on the blacking out theme, i have seen guys talk about removing the chrome around the windows. do you have to change the rubber? any closeup picts of how this looks when removed?

thanks
jeff

With the FJ60's you can remove the emblem, just a couple of screws hold it on. The emblem on the FJ62 grill is not removable.

i painted my back vents. they look factory. used "Bulldog Adhesive Promoter" as a primer, then painted SEM "Trim Black" #39143. not a true flat finish, but not a gloss either.

the Bulldog promoter is the best way to go for painting on plastic. they said it wouldn't flake off.

planning on using this same combo on the grill and headlights.

I also used the adhesive promoter. I swear I lost numerous amounts of brain cells during the process.

62' black grill

Here's mine with Durabak. Stuff never comes off (especially human skin--took 2 weeks to wear off. Doh!) I bought a gallon of that stuff and just went crazy--roof rack, grill, vents, receiver hitch, sliders.

Today (Saturday) I spent some time in the garage and sanded the grill with 400 grit sandpaper. I then washed everytking off with soap and water, rinsed. looks clean. Plan to paint tomorrow.

A friend came over and took a look and said something to the effect that I'd REALLY have to rough it up if paint was going to stick. The 400 grit sandpaper didn't seem to rough it up much to me either. In a small area I tried some 120 grit and the difference is really noticeable.

So what I need is some confirmation that you think that the 400 is going to be enough. I plan to use a a coat of primer and then 2 coats of Krylon. Think that will do it??

One other question - the donor "Toyota" is painted white. I'm ok with that but maybe chrome would look better? Is there a chrome paint on the market?

Thanks.

I used a green scotch-brite pad and it really scuffed the chrome
finish on the grill so good i didnt need sand paper. I then used
Wal-Mart's rattle can spray bed liner. Not as rough as Durabak
but very sturdy also. Got the idea from Ige (nuclearlemon) thanks

Here is my grill i finally got around to. used the Bulldog adhesive promoter and SEM "Trim Black". Grill, headlight bezels, front vents and back vents.

Next step is an ARB front bumper!

Kling-on -

did you paint the door handles on the truck or take them off? if taken off, how difficult to do that.

Black out Photshop

I am debating whether or not to black out the grill on my '88 62, so I took a picture of it, and photoshopped the grill into black. The first one is the before picture, the second is the after picture. Tell me what you guys think.

The black grill makes it look more aggresive in my opinion.
