Im thinking about doing this to mine since it is something I can do that isn't that expensive and will take some time so i don't get so bored.

Any advice before i start.

Just sand it down and prep it really well, so it won't flake off. I did that to mine and since it is plastic, the paint still came off. Looks like I may need to try another paint this time...

I didn't even sand the chrome, I was in a hurry...now I'm trying to figure out how to get the bugs off and keep the paint on....maybe paint over the bugs...

How to Paint your Grille

These are the steps that I took to paint my grille:

Thoroughly clean the grille(make shure there is no oil or grease on it)

Sand it. this step is going to decide how well your finished result will be. Put lots of time and effort in to the sanding and prepping and your grille will be a beauty. For your paint to stick well it is usually recommended a 400 or 600 grit (bigger number finer the sand paper)sand paper. It is good to always do wet sanding because it prolongs the life of your sand paper and dosent allow dust particles to get in the air. If it is really bad, then start with a very coarse sand paper, you can also try using power tools(you have to get creative.)

you have to clean the grille again, because you can't leave any dust or dirt between the paint and the grille.

Now you can start with the cool part. You have a choice now. you can use a primer under the paint, or you can just paint it. I recommend using primer, because it is a very good medium for the paint to properly stick.
when you are going to paint you have to paint in a good sunny day with low humidity.
Paint the grille with primer, all of the coats have to be LIGHT if they are too heavy you can end up dripping paint, let 5 to 10 minutes between coats. after you finished applying the last coat of primer, wait 15 min then start painting with the black paint(remember LIGHT coats) apply all of the coats needed to completely paint it with primer or black, but never over paint.

after it dries, you can kick back and watch your masterpeice!

I did mine a few years ago...also did emblems on rear gate and quarters.....took my chrome raingutter trim off ...then herculined the gutter area look good....also herculined whole inside of tub...made and coated aliminium panels to replace cardboard ones behined rear seat

When sanding the primer, I found that the Scotch pads work very well - gets into all the nooks and crannies easily to make sure all the primer is scuffed. Either green or the purple works good.

Power washed mine to remove flaking plastic then used wallyworld spray can bedliner. Bumby texture worked great for hiding crack repairs I had made. 1 year later it still looks great:grinpimp:

Black out with champaign (color not booze)?

The blacked out grill looks great on the grey and red LC's but does anyone have a champaign colored cruiser with the grill blacked out? I need to see pics before I make the leap!!
Thanks!

It seems like a saw one in the registry, not sure though. If you are really good with photoshop you might could figure it out.

2 coats of rattlecan bed liner 24 hrs between coats..seems to work fine. Only thing that ever hits the front is skeeters:beer:

You've probably also answered this before: Where's you get that bumper?

I'm putting a 60 front on my 62 and was going to go black until I ran across a great deal on CCOT's aftermarket grill and buckets. Now I'll stay chrome.

Sorry to just now respond...

A guy in LSLC made that bumper for another member, and I bought it when he upgraded to an ARB. I love the fact that there isn't another one like it; it is very well built too. Sorry, gotta brag a little.

There's nothing wrong with chrome; I still have my old chrome grille and besels in case I get tired of the black!

Laters,

C
