Anyone here replace a clutch booster on a 1987 BJ74?

The booster is inside the fire wall.

I cannot get the booster past the steering shaft and clutch pedal. It is a very tight fit. Anyone have any tricks to get the booster past the steering shaft?

Thanks,

Hello,

Sorry i can help with removing the clutch booster. Have u got it out yet? My booster has lost pressure but I haven't replaced it yet cause I cant find a new one. Where did u find a replacement one? My only option at the moment is to wait untill i have a few days of work, where I dont have to drive, and get it rebuilt. The stiffer clutch is not to much of a problem tho. I need to overhual my brakes to. Thats a bit more important.

Good luck with the booster. Sorry I cant help u out.

Gav.

Yep. It sucks. Steering column out, pedals etc.

I still haven't replaced mine but had to pull it to fix the clutch pedal hanger which self destructs when a rig has no booster. It's just too flimsy for the job. I had to reinforce it a bit on my way to Alaska.

Hearing now that I have to take out the steering shaft and pedals, I may have a booster for sale.

Lowenbrau,

Did the hanger break where the spring attaches to cotter pin?

If you would like to sell your clutch booster i will buy it, for a reasonable price. Did you have much trouble finding one?

I'm assuming your in Canada. I'm in Australia. There are plenty of Cruisers in Oz but the BJ 74 is a Japanese import and therefore very rare. I've located one at a local wrecker but the clutch booster got damaged from the accident it was in. There are plenty of other good parts on it but my BJ is pretty good and I don't need them.

How available are parts for the BJ74 in Canada? I would be keen to buy from Canada or Japan if I can't get parts in Oz. Many of the parts are interchangable with other makes but I haven't found another model Land Cruiser that uses the BJ 74 cluth booster. I was thinking maybe a HZJ 78 or 79 but not sure.

Another cruiser must use the same style booster. Something with a turbo. I think thats why the booster is located in the foot well on a BJ 74. The petrol models (FJ 70/73) have them in the engine bay but they have room in there cause they dont run a turbo. Thats what I'm thinking anyway.

If you can help out that would be awesome.

Cheers, sorry for so many questions but I'm a bit of a cruiser freak.

I can't remember exactly. I posted that it had broken in three spots but It was a helluva adventure after that and the job got lost in my memory banks.

The post about it is here

Bugger. So when I got my BJ74 two years ago I bought a new clutch booster, which it seems I managed to tear the diaphragm in trying to install it, only upon further examination did I find that the pedal pivot bracket was torn and bent (which explains why stuff wouldn't line up...)... So I did a bit of a rush job repairing it to get it back on the road...

On monday the pedal dropped suddenly and then on the drive home tonight it dropped further and I limped home with no clutch.

My brother's BJ74 also has a leaking booster (but still working) so I might look at ordering more boosters from the vendor in china. Anyone interested?

Have you tried trademe in NZ, there are plenty of bj74, I got some stuff recently from trademe NZ and the freight charge was better than expected ? I can't believe the booster is not transferable across other cruisers, my has slight leak as well but not too concerned at this stage, maybe I need to keep an eye out

Getting the booster repaired is that an option, ?? If your looking to get few boosters from vendor ensure to let me know, I would be interested as a back up .

I have never removed the steering column only the brackets holding it in place on the firewall and loosened the brackets off under the dash to allow for some movement. Of course the pedal assembly has to come out as well. It takes a while to find the perfect position but the booster will come out like this.

I had a China booster, didnt last long. Got my factory booster rebuild locally and no problems at all. Was about $200 to rebuild

Where was the kit sourced from?

I had mine done too - about twelve months ago. My mechanic sent it to his brake guy [no one special] and they just rekitted it. Pretty sure they had the parts on the shelf. Huge difference too, I understand why sh!t breaks when it's faulty or missing.

x2, just had to do a new clutch booster output seal (resolved my engine failure to shut down issue

Booster R&R was under an hour.

Looks like my booster is not holding full vacum now after replacing master and adjusting pedal height etc, worked fine until yesterday, clutch engagement is not heavy and works great, although donk won't shut off, The shutter valve only half closes, when ignition off
I took off the hose from canister to booster, and thumbed over canister pipe, engine shut down immediately, thus indicating booster leak and from what I'm reading above, hopefully it's just the seal?? Anyone got the part number for this seal ..

Thanks Malahki, I will keep that handy, I took ot out master again and corrected the booster push rod to the piston within master, and once I put it back together, it seemed vacum returned to booster, time will though,
