From what I've read it sounds to me like 4.11's are the recommended gear ratio for 33" to 35" tires.

Since I've never driven a BJ60, let alone one with 33" to 35" tires, can someone share any personal experience with me as to how well this works with the 3B engine? My main concern is whether it can work, and still be enjoyable to drive and travel with. Since I picked up my '84 BJ60, I've had some people tell me that the 3B is totally gutless, but I've also had other people tell me they're excellent engines (which is two different things I guess!). I'm used to driving 1st gen 4Runners with the 22RE with 31" tires, and they have plenty of power for me.

Perhaps unrelated to the topic, but also how noisey are these rigs on the highway?

Thanks

3B is guttless but a fantastic engine for longevity and abuse.
your 5th gear will become redundent on all but flat to down hill sections.
off road the 3B X4.11 and 35s do just fine.
cheers

i run my 83 bj60 (JDM) on 33s, 4.11s (i assume)

yeh, slow off the mark, fairly gutless on steep and/or long hills

i can sit on 115km/h (72mph) doin about 2400rpms on a flatish highway

its all relative mate

First time I drove my BJ60 leaving Calgary on the highway(towards Banff) I thought OMG this things is slow. Had a hard time holding 100.

Then I bought a pyro and opened the fuel up. Now I overfuel and watch the temps. Made a diff to me. BUT my PO backed the fuel off(lead was gone)

Now I can't wait to drive with the turbo on there.

BJ-60 with 35" 4.56 .. IMOP .. if your plans included turboed and good highway economy .. 4.11 come nice ..

To me in both cases 4.56 :D ( keeping in mynd H55F tranny )

I would go 4.56. I ran my truck with 4.11s and 35s for about 3 years. I recently changed to the 3.05:1 transfer gears which lowers hi range about 10%. I find that I switch gears alot less and that it is much easier on the motor going up hills. Mileage is around the same, but I can't do more than 110km/hr which is fine by me.

RPMs are around 3000 at 110km/hr which is a little high so I usually cruise at 100km/hr. I might go to 37"s but it drives so nice as is.
My friend has been running NA 3B with 4.56/ 35s for 10 years now with no problem.
I would highly recommend a turbo though- the best upgrade I have done to my truck.

After I see the Marks low gear setup I think a lots in many options .. make the numbers and after years ( saving money also :D ) I go with those ..

I'm pretty Happy .. 4.56 + marks gears + 37" 120km/h @ 2500 rpm .. looks pretty nice to me ..

for sure .. I want turbo !

Sorry I screwed up the numbers.

At 110Km/hr the rpms are 2800 with 4.11, H55F and mark's 1.08:1 high range.

I have a AXT turbo, a real old one with the smaller turbine housing. Having an intercooler, it helps with the turbo lag.

Sorry no real updated pics although I did post one a few years back in the 'reader's rigs' It was SU then and the pic was in Belize.

That sounds better and reflects close to what my experience is on both the BJ60 and BJ74 with the Marks under/under sets and H55F. Are your 35"s true 35"s? My rpms are slight lower on the BJ74 with the 35x10.5R16 SSR's.

I do not know what you mean by 'true 35s' but they are 35 12.50 r 15 MTRs with about 50% tread left. As you may know the tach on the 60 series is quite small, so it is hard to establish an accurate number. I am really bad at math ,but I am sure someone could figure it out.

Hey Greg, thanks for the help with post ignition. Found it fixed it. Hey I have been lookin at a suspension/tire upgrade. One of the shops here said even with the 13B turbo I would not be able to use fifth gear with 35" tires. This is a problem for me as I do a fair bit of highway. Is this the situation with your BJ74? Is it moded much?
Thanks

No worries, and good.

Do you mean the 13BT and 35". That is not a problem at all!!! I was intending on the Marks 3:05/1:0 but ****ed up and ended up getting the 3:05/1:08. I was specifically going with the 1:0 high range because the 13BT does not have any issues moving my 35" SSR's along at all (and they are not light tires). Talk to Ratpuke (has had 35x12.5 SSR's on a 13BT powered BJ42, or Behemouth as he has 38" militaries on a BJ74). I am undergeared for highway driving now. That shop does not know what they are talking about.

My BJ74 has the boost bumped to 10.5lbs, fuel left alone, and I just put a 2.5" exhaust on before Alaska.

Make sure you have a boost and pyro installed. It is really easy on the highway to get your EGT's up and not know it.

Stated tire size with most manufacturers is well.....very generous. 35" tires, inflated and on the truck are usually somewhere between 33" and 33.5". The rim you are using will effect diameter too. Best to calculate rpm with the true tire diameter, not the stated one.

GregB;

Thanks, I had no idea. Makes sense. I wonder what the rational is for this.

Does your 1.08:1 whine quite loud at 70-100km/hr? Mine are the newer helical cut/tapered roller bearing gears and they supposed to be quieter, but still they are quite loud. Quite a high pitched whine.

Cheers
