GregB;

Thanks, I had no idea. Makes sense. I wonder what the rational is for this.

Does your 1.08:1 whine quite loud at 70-100km/hr? Mine are the newer helical cut/tapered roller bearing gears and they supposed to be quieter, but still they are quite loud. Quite a high pitched whine.

Cheers

I do not know if it is the Redline MT90, the increased insulation in the BJ74 (vs a 1983 BJ60), or the newer cut gears...but the new gearset (same as yours) in the BJ74 is quieter then the older set in my BJ60. It may be a combination of all three. All that said, the gear whine is still quite noticable with the new set. They are quieter after the road trip to Alaska.

Are you sure they are quieter, or have you gotten used to the noice and don't notice it, or deafer (is that a word?) because of the noise?:D

Eh? Speak louder would you...

Na, they are quieter. I've been driving the BJ60 around since I got back, and on the freeway I need earplugs to keep my sanity. It's either that or fix the stereo so I have music!

Earplugs! Dang, what's the specs on this BJ60? Just curious so I know what to expect. :)

The BJ60 has the older gearset, which is noiser. I really could have 3:70's in it, to bring the rpms down to around 2100 or so for freeway driving, however in it's currect set-up I am at 2500rpm on the freeway, and they really sing above 2200-2300. 13BT/H55F/marks under/under, 35" TXR (noisy tires after a while), 4:11's. The sound deadening on a 1983 is not as good any in the late 80's and onwards either.

It is a-okay around town. Only sings when above 2200-2300 as mentioned.

Yeah, the noise is quite brutal.

I removed my carpet and sprayed truck-bed liner over the floor. man was that ever loud. Needless to say the carpet is back in. I might invest in some dynamat. Especially around the tranny access.

The sound for me is worse at 90-100km/km rather than rpm.

Can anything else be done to reduce the whine? Thoughts? Mabey this needs a new post.
