Use a dual battery with $120 canuck tire batteries. Keep them for two years, discharge them and get new batteries.

I just put a P-2 in my '75 FJ40 yesterday. It was too long and wide for the stock tray. I made spacers by cutting some 1"x1" aluminum tube to 7" and rivited on 2"x2" aluminum angle cut to 6". This allowed me to shift the battery 1" to the rear. Height was not an issue.

9 years? Seriously?

True stuff, for $10 they will triple the warranty. I will probably own the 45 at least that long.

Hilary Clinton...huh?

2 years or so, that's the plan.

The Batteries Plus here has a battery that is similar to Odyssey's that are "supposedly" designed by ex-Odyssey engineers. Has 5 year full replacement warranty, capacity is similar per size to the Odyssey/Platinums. List is around $230 for a 65 series. No experience with it though.

X2 on re-inventing the wheel.

I run a MotorMaster Eliminator (Canadian Tire house brand) with a 9 year full replacement warrantee and 27 year pro-rated. It's 800 or 900 CCA.

I find that the 8274 is hard on them, probably on all batterys. I am considering a second battery in the truck.

The battery has never failed me on cold (-30C) mornings.

If you're serious...
How much is a 9 yr battery and how long have you owned it?
Why would you consider a 2nd battery if it's warranty'd for 9 yrs?

Optima was sold to Johnson Controls a few years ago. Manufacturing went to Mexico. Hit and miss quality. Sears die hard platinum is the way to go. AGM technology and Sears stands by the product. My FJ40 never started as well, and I have had optimas since they came out. Sears , and never looking back, at least for now.

I had an optima go bad several yars ago, and so started discussing batteries with my father-in-law. He deals with batteries all of the time because he is in the solar business.

His recommendation was to look into the DEKA INTIMADATOR batteries. They are a gell-cell, (won't leak, similar to an Otima- you can mount them anywhere), deep-cycle battery, that will handle many, many dishcharge/recharge cycles.

I immediately bought two for my Cummins Diesel. It's now been 3 years of many fridgid-cold-weather starts, running my camper lights and furnace for hours, and just general, everyday use, and I am totally satisfied. The price was less than what you'd pay for an Optima, but about what you'd pay for a good, heavy-duty battery of any other kind.

I also put one in my 'Cruiser. The part # is 9A34R and it has 785 CCA and the posts are located in the correct spots. Very pleased with it so far as well.

Just my .02.

Thinking this will be my next battery... Sears: Online department store featuring appliances, tools, fitness equipment and more think it will just squeeze into the stock tray? 4yr warranty and 930CCA

Double checking the width will be tight!! My tray is 7" on the money.

I put that in my 40 a year ago this month. Fits well, although the length of it caused the positive cable to be stretched over the top. I didn't like that, so fixed it yesterday, with a longer cable. I can add a pic, if anyone is interested.

The battery cost $120 or so and then the extended warranty ws another $10.

The second battery would be for the winch.

I've had great luck with the Sears Die Hard Gold (south). They have gone 5+ years easy for me on many vehicles. I replaced the Wally world battery that came with my 40 at least four times (all for free) before buying a new Sears battery-no problems since. Good luck.

The best batteries I've had are the OEM Yuasa that came in my 82 mini truck originally and lasted 9 years. My Echo has 8 years on it's OEM Panasonic battery. Too bad we cant get those here. Now I use AC Delco Professional because they have a 50 month free replacement warranty.

1980 BJ40. I killed my Red Top Optima batteries by leaving my brake lights on for a week. (pedal sticky)
Can anyone confirm the group size 35 on these? I have to but 2 new batteries this week, my truck is 3 hours away. We use it 95 % off road and don't want the Optima again (in case I have to jump start) thinking of gong with Interstate. Thanks for the help in advance !

If the diehard's are as good now as the ones I used in the 80's then I will still recommend them.
When I was building my first house off the grid I used two regular Diehard batteries for about a year before I got my solar and wind generator with Deep cycle batteries going.
I went with Trojans for storage.
For starting my cars now the Napa batteries are working fine.
You need a battery with high CC amps for starting and a deep well batt with a high amp hr rating for things like a winch and prolonged electrical use.
If you are using a starter batt for something like a winch then at least leave the engine running.

I have been using these since they came out 15+ years ago , Never A problem through the battery's normal life cycle

the warranty is very good also

and fairly priced

That is what came in the FJ62 I just bought. It looks pretty old, but works fine. I wish I knew how old it was. No date punched or sticker. It has some code in the plastic, but it wasn't self explanatory.

My thoughts on batteries. Some seem to last a long time. Some dont. By the time I figure out which ones last longest, they change manufacturing and cheapen the product. Just like a boat trolling motor, if you have and use a winch often, then you probably need two batteries and a switch.

To be honest I've not had any better luck with those. Bought a couple thinking there were the same battery as what Toyota put in the Land Cruisers in Japan. Believe the ones I've bought were made in Mexico. Pretty much paying for the Toyota name. I hauled my FJ45 back our cabin because of the extreme fire danger. Believe the last time I used it was 2004. Being older it's getting harder to push these around so figure I would get it running to move around. I grabbed a battery that has been sitting on the floor of the garage at our cabin for years. Can't remember the story on it but believe it was in my mom's Highlander. It was dead and traded in a old junker battery when I replaced it. Of course I had the battery off the concrete on a piece of wood. Date on it is May 2011. Slowed charged and install it in the 45. Took a couple days fixing things on the 45 to get it running. Battery has held it charge during that time. Not sure of the brand but think Johnson Controls is making batteries that are being rebadged under other names. My plan is to pull the battery and haul it back to the cooler climate. The two vehicles I have there are over seven years old and still holding their charge. Personally for desert I would not spend money for a expensive battery as the heat is a killer. Our local O'Reilly sells batteries with a free two year replacement and no prorated after that. I switched to Walmart since they still have a descent warranty for my desert dwellers where two years is the norm.
Just my 2¢

I have been using a big deep cycle from AZ with good success thru the yrs. They are something like a 2yr battery but I get 4 or 5 yrs out of them. I only run 1 battery, and I do use my winch a lot. I also like it, if for some reason I have mechanical problems, it cranks for a long time. I also run a 100 amp alt.
