Best plug in cooler??? What your take?

Got my norcold for less than $100, actually got two of them for under that, in a span of a few weeks, with a little effort trolling craigslist. It is 20 years old or so, and works like a champ. It is the original ugly mustard yellowish color though. I don't use it much on DC power though, to be honest. I have found myself using it more frequently on 120vAC for beer/soda for summer get togethers, or extra space when the home freezer is full. I would want a dual batt setup if I were going to use it for remote camping.
The other advantage is, it gives you an excuse to build that uber-cool dual batt system! :D

PS. We just bought 4 of the plastic bodied Engel 14qt freezer/fridge/warmer for our Medic Units at work, to keep normal saline cold for cardiac arrest victims. The vehicles are plugged into 120vAC when they are at the station, but I think the fridge has been the culprit in running the battery dead overnight when a particular rig is accidentally left unplugged.

No reason you couldn't use a 3-way for that (either on 120 or propane). :meh:

That's true. But a 3-way will give me an excuse to build that uber-cool trailer I've been itching to build for several years.

Hmmm....sorry, trailer wins.

Cool use for 'em. Yeah, they'll kill a battery right quick if given the chance, and it *SUCKS* to have a battery die on you. Suckers are spendy enough to replace every 3-5 years as is. Kill it just a few times and you'll replace the battery several times a year if you're careless.

My propane running out might result in my having warm food...but not being stuck out in the middle of nowhere (which if you forget to separate the batteries could happen).

Couldn't reliably use it as a freezer:p. I got less than $100 into it, so I'm happy.:)

If you are going to run a fridge of any kind in the vehicle I would strongly suggest dual battery system so it does not affect the start battery. If you are in the middle of knowhere and flat battery it is going to be a problem.

Use a deep cycle battery so if it does run flat it is not a problem and will not cause the battery to fail. It will charge up again without problem. I run both deep cycle batteries in my system. Does not have quite the crank amps on the start battery but have never had a problem with that.

There is also some good info in the other thread I read.

It's not as if a fridge and a single battery setup means you're doomed...
I've set up my fridge so it stops running before the battery goes too low to start the truck.
And I have an emergency starter battery stashed in the back. Will reliably start the engine on its own several times in a row and can be used for many other things. And less than $100.
