Other than DOG as copilot, best free "mod" is a PROPER valve adjustment. Often overlooked, 'cuz a bit of a PITA to do, and do right, but can really make a tired engine come alive.
While you're there, check the torque on the head bolts.

I find the beeping that is going on when the engine is off and the key is in the ignition switch VERY anoying.
Pulling the connector out of the seat belt warning relay (behind the side panel on the passenger side) is a solution but there is a way to put this relay to good work.
Just cut the red/white wire and connect this to a lights related (+) wire.
This way the relay beeps when the engine is off and the light are on.
Never forget to switch off the lights again !!!!!
