In the spirit of "Best mods under $50" thread," I thought I'd start a thread on free mods.

My best free mod so far:

Just switched the D/S and P/S front seats. 8 bolts, and 4 screws.
I had to move the drink holder elsewhere (which was in a weird spot anyways), and had to remove the plastic cover on the recline handle so it would clear the center console on the (new) P/S seat.

Time: 30 minutes

Worth: priceless! I sit a good 2 inches higher, do not slump out towards the door, and the back cushioning is way better.

Will do until I find some sweet heated leather seats and have the money at the same time as finding them...thanks again MUD Gods.

I'm sure the passenger may not feel the same enthusiasm as you do with this..."mod"! but I like it!:hillbilly:

PS is there no way to swap which side the recline lever is on?

Removal of the interior carpet - free
Chop the front fenders and rockers - free
Properly adjust the carb - free
2 low mod - free

FJ62 - Properly adjust the throttle and kickdown cables - totally transform the way it performs

Next on my list of free mods "to do" is:

-adjust carb (though not quite free with carb clean, shoptowels, and seafoam intake cleaner)
-2 low mod
-waterproof cargo area cover (heavy thick vinyl), from previous Subaru I no longer own.

etc....

lambcrusher: passenger is a springer/lab mix, copilot, car alarm / thief mauler...he prefers the seats down and the back cargo area. He was obtained through a free ad in the Durango, CO newspaper, so I'm claiming the free mod, better than all my other free mods put together...

So this "free" mod - does it have a name? I mean, ya can't just put his pic in without a proper introduction. I'm glad he can even steer, that's good.

X2 on the dog (Heidi), free from craigslist... easily the best mod available. In addition to copilot/alarm/thief deterrent, she's a great coyote chaser when camping/wheeling down in Baja. Also loves sitting the in the truck while I wrench, better company than most people.

Dogs name is "Chance" and he has saved my life more than twice...

Instead of swapping the whole seat I changed just the bottom foam. It takes a little bit longer, maybe an hour, and keeps the seat recline lever to the outsides. If you're really cheap the hog rings can be reused.

I was going to say the same thing....

I tore down a set of FJ62 seats. No big deal really just a little bit of a pita and takes time.

I took the FJ62 rear seat and put my FJ60 vinyl covers on them. I did it so I had head rests on the rear seat and because the 62s rear seat was in better shape then my 60s.

It was free other then the cost of the beers I drank while I did it. ;)

Few other things I have done for free....but I suppose they are only free since I have an FJ62 parts truck sitting here. :hillbilly:

Sanding down the crusty dried plastic off the rearview mirror, taping off the mirror and painting it flat black, looks so much better! I had the paint already so it was free :)

I think my plastic is so dried up and cracked there are holes in it

Texas sun got the best of it :crybaby:

 fair nuff.

Leftover carpet remnant cut to size for the rear cargo area...area looks brand new and is totally replaceable in two seconds...free.

Install air horn sitting around the garage....free.

Installing the thick rubber floor mats in the front and back seat areas from the Honda Pilot I just sold...they fit pretty well too!...free.

Installing the cargo net from the Honda Pilot back there as well to hold stuff...free.

De-smog.

Utter PITA but it runs much better now.
Lots of conflicting advice around, but trial and error is ever your friend.

Had not:

A) the PO removed half the stuff
B) the PO unhooked and randomly reconnected the remaining vacuum lines
C) half the remaining vacuum lines rotted and cracked at generally invisible places
D) the unholy alliance of US smog laws and Toyota engineering combined to create a monster

I might have left it and maintained it. But all that happened so I didn't.

Other than DOG as copilot, best free "mod" is a PROPER valve adjustment. Often overlooked, 'cuz a bit of a PITA to do, and do right, but can really make a tired engine come alive.

Horn fix

Somewhere on here I read about this fix and it works brilliantly.

If your horn doesn't work or works only some places in the steering wheel rotation, pull the wheel. See that little spring loaded button thingie? Take it off. Get a .22lr shell case and stick it on the spring. Make sure it extends up to the mounting platform for the steering wheel, if not heat it up and put a drop or two of solder in it. put a dab of grease on the end, remount steering wheel, viola! Working horn.

Ok, ok, not free 'cause I had to burn down a .22 round. Get over it.
