You just HAD to open that can of worms...

Falken tire. I'd consider using that $55 (x5 road haz) on a sixth tire that you might use someday.
Those look good. The sidewall lugs don't look quite as comprehensive as KO2's b, but it seems like a lot of people prefer these for road manners. I love my KO2s offroad, but they've been pretty noisy and seem to go out of balance all the time. I've had them rebalanced 2-3 times since mounting.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards Costco. Seems like it's a pain to get in, but paying $55 extra per tire seems silly, especially since Discount is always trying to sell me tires before I need them : /

Another vote for Toyo Open Country A/T III's. I have done a lot of off-roading and road trips in my GX and previous Tacoma with these tires and have been quite impressed.

Got a sidewall flat, got 48K on my KO2's. KO2's are about to be discontinued. Guess I should probably get a new set. I hate to ask, as the only thing more debated over here is "should I use premium gas"... but here we go... (deep inhale)

What tires do you guys think are the best LT AT tires for the trail in 2024?

Why not just run KO3s if you like the KO2s?

I love the Toyo RT Trails I am running on the Super Duty but I don't know if they offer them in the smaller sizes these GX's need. I will be moving to the new KO3's once these KO2's come off.

I'll raise my hand for another vote for BFG. I've never had an issue with the KO2's, not getting noisy nor needing alignment. They just run fine. We have them on both my wife's 4x4 Taco and mine.
The BFG M/T's will get noisy at about half worn, but haven't noticed it with the KO2's.

I would of bought KO2's but I couldn't justify the extra cost over the Nittos or my current Generals.

The new KO3s are quite heavy. Around 3# more than a Wildpeak, which is already a heavy tire, and a full 9# more than a Toyo or a Baja Boss.

Otherwise, I would have tried them.

Costco has a good warranty, they inflate with nitrogen, cheaper and they're pretty much all over the country if you get a puncture.
Just need to be sure they have your size.
Regarding the fact that they cost less at Costco, question, do they realllly cost less after you get out of spending a few hundred dollars inside Costco while waiting for your tires to be mounted? ;)

They are the best "do it all" tire out there in my opinion.

One thing to consider... you're much more likely to run into the "Sir, the tire size you want is not the stock size that comes on your vehicle from the factory sir, and we can't install those for you sir" razz-ma-tazz at Costco. Seems to depend on location, and who you get at the tire counter so maybe you'll get lucky - or you won't.

At the Costco nearest me, they wouldn't sell or install a 265-65-18 tire on my GX because it's not the 'stock' size. YMMV.

All the more reason to just use your local independent tire shop. Mine called to confirm the size I wanted was a 285 and that I had some rubbing after the install, but was otherwise totally amenable to putting whatever I wanted on the rig. None of the BS of the place overtly trying to harvest customer data or saying something is "against their policy". The dude I order tires from is in his 50s and has been selling them for 30+ years, compared to the 22 year old kid at the chain place. Discount is probably a little better than our regional chain (Plaza) but is still a sanitized, corporate experience. I haven't tried getting tires at a Sams/Costco as the nearest stores are 50+ miles from here.

Here are my Falken Wildpeak AT3W in 265/70R17 at stock ride height.

I've been really happy with these tires for about 4.5 years, and 45k miles. Great road manners and amazing grip off-road and in snow. I've had a handful of punctures in the city from hardware left on the ground, but never any issues on the trail. Bear in mind that this specific tire is no longer available and I can't vouch for the updated AT4W.

I'm committed to trying the Toyo next, because variety is the spice of life and my truck needs to lose weight almost as much as I do. But I think the Falkens are the best tire I've ever run, including a bunch of KO2s on previous rigs.

As mentioned, must be per store. Our local Costco had no problem when I asked the to put 315/70R17's on my GX. They just asked if I was sure it was going to fit, which I confirmed.

Whether a retail store will install an off-spec size shouldn't ever be a factor. If they are nazis, bring in just the wheels for tire replacement or use a better shop. Discount/retail stores rely heavily on sales of conventional configurations and lose their minds a little when asked for something not recommended by their filter/tire/wiper blade app/program. Tell them you want a bias-ply whitewall in H78R14 and they'll faint or seize. Good 4-wheel shops are your friend.

Well, I feel bad. I got us all up in a lather here, and I think I've decided to just stick with what I've got and road hazard out the tire for free...

I like the Wildpeaks and Toyos, but I've had good luck with my K02's (Aside from the re-balance issues). I think I want to just wait and see if the KO3s come out in a C-load equivalent. They're only available in a 10-ply E-load equivalent now, and I don't want to stiffen up my ride or add 10lbs per tire. If not, I'll probably go with the Wildpeaks.

I also realized that I was smart(ish) and put the same size KO2's on my wife's 4runner. In 5-10K, when I have to replace mine, I can save the new(ish) one and use it as a BU for hers, which I didn't do the road hazard on (we don't wheel hers). Camping season is coming to a close anyway, so I might as well grind out the 5-10K I have left on mine commuting in the offseason and swap them out in the spring when we get active on the trail again.

I also realized this is the 2nd tire I'll have gotten for the $300 in road hazard fees ($50*5 plus one replacement), so I'll be up over $250 on Discount. Seems like the non-prorated road hazard expense has been worth it in my case and saved money in the long run. Costco's road hazard is prorated. It also seems like everyone complains that they don't stock much, so there's always a delay in getting the replacements, and they're only in urban areas. Discount is in every backwater, including Payson and Flagstaff, AZ where we spend the most time on the trail.

I appreciate all your input and the pics!

I've been really happy with these tires
Sweet shot! But is it me, or is your wife flipping you off? My wife feels more or less the same way when I say, "Can we pull over here so I can spend 15 minutes getting the perfect shot of the GX?"

Just Kidding. I never ask. I just tell her I need to check something on the rig.
