Best carb upgrade for '78 2F...?

I think its a "lot" of money needed.
Really depends on willingness to bargain, level of DIY and how perfect one wants the end result.

That said these orders from Amayama/Partsouq/YAJ get out of hand when I'm sitting in front of my computer and a little excitement hits.

Old vehicles (especially ones not passed down through family with known history) are best for folks that have patience, a little money, and no sense.

If truly learning how to revive something (anything outside its known service life) and doing it with actual focus and quality is a point of pride, then you'll do well. If not, sell it...

So sack up and learn how to fix it correctly or move on.
Mom..?

I've got an idea, I'll keep my 45 yr old warped carb and grab my old points, plugs, and condenser out of the trash and put those back in.
Happy?

Grow up. I bored the engine and added a header and dual exhaust because I hate the sewing machine sound of these old 2Fs. Now it sounds like a Stuka dive bomber warming up. It's my rig, son.

I'm trying to decide which of your responses was worse, the original or the edited one. It's a tough one.

I've got another if you're interested....
You guys hijacked my thread. I asked about upgrading my fuel system, now mattressthing's going to throw himself under a bus unless I buy one of his (or somebody's) reconditioned Aisin carbs. There's tons written here about those, it's a quagmire.

Never had so much fun in my life than I've had with this project. Have to pay to play, amigos.
Buy the ticket, take the ride.

Yep it is pay to play. You need tools and manuals first. Then its down to what you can do with what you have. Next is/are there parts you can get and afford, followed closely by can you afford the machine work and is there someone that does good work close by?

What do you mean those inspection ports from a thrown rod will cost extra to fix?

Any real life experiences to share on carb upgrades for a 1978 2F?
Some.
I like the mechanical secondary better than the vacuum secondary. I didn't like the idea of the fuel cut-off solenoid so I removed it. I didn't like the idea of the throttle positioner so I removed it too. It's a 10/'73 datestamp, it came on my Pig when I got it in '86. Rebuild kits are cheap. I've never seen the need to try any other carb. I know I can fix a carb on the trail, I'm not sure I can do that with fuel injection. I like what I know.
