I'm constantly fighting the urge to grab another 40 too mate. Heaps of really tidy utes over here I'd love to own. I'm just trying to keep my focus on the troopy until she's done. I've absolutely fallen for her and think she'll be a member of the family for a long time. The main reason my wife's stayed on board with the project so well is the promise of one well restored, clean, good looking tourer. Not 1 half done troopy and 3 more bombs in the shed. Haha. But maybe once troopys done I'll start collecting again.... I'll keep an eye out mate. But the 40-5 speeds are super rare over here as well. I count myself very lucky!
Got a old but clean ute (pickup here) already. A very clean 84 troopy from Australia got wrecked local to me. Picked up the running except the 2H. It even had a PTO winch. If I could have picked up the whole thing would have probably switched to diesel. Once the yard guys got their hands on it at the wreckers that make a mess of the wiring in short order. Plus diesel parts are hard to come by and a upgrade like your doing would probably have been in order.
I was surprised when you said you had a five speed from a petrol 40. Lately a guy in Australia posted he had a FJ40 with a stock five speed. Only one I remember reading about. 4x series five speeds seemed to be mated to a 3B. Most all F and H input shafts seem to come from 60/70 series. Very lucky indeed to have found one.
Looks like your doing a top notch job. Going to look like new and drive even better than new. I assume you will take it by the previous owner to show him you indeed followed thru and didn't buy it to grab some parts. I'm sure he wouldn't recognize it.
