Still looking for that Rockhopper on FZJ80 information.

G'Day Rick,

I still don't see anything on the Big Balls site about rockhopper gears for Cruisers. Ya got 'em or not (RH gears that is not Big Balls :D )?

I want those gears too dang it.

Nice rig...how well do those tires deform offroad?

x2 on the Rockhopper reduced t-case gears. Post some info or price or something Rick.

so, with 4" spring lift, no flares and little trimming can fit up to 40" tyres, does that mean a 2" lift, no flares and trimming will fit 35/36" ???

got some spare 35" claws, might try to fit these up to my 80 series (2" lift, flares and currently 33" tyres) and see how they look

Nice ride.

4:88's with a reduction on 40"s. Broken anything yet?

i would say yes they will fit, but ya might need to play with the bump stops

How are the 4:88's working out turning 40's with the crawler gears in the Tcase? Since you've kept your 80 Utilitarian.

I'm still up in the air between 5:29's and 4:88's turning 36's (TSL/SX's). I could run 5:29's alone and drive 60 on the highway, or go 4:88's and run 70 on the highway until I get to the mountains; which makes me want 5:29's again. The 36's are killing the stock gears/power/gas on and off road and I'm wondering if 4:88 is really low enough for every purpose.

As well, when and where will these Tcase gears be available in the US?

Thanks,

Hi Guys,

I'm from Sydney Australia and managed to find this forum while searching for stuff on the 80 series cruisers.

Rick, which state are you from?

Chris

Wait - 40s will fit on an 80 with a 4" lift?

Yea, but not for a rockcrawler. If it was ideal we would see more of them without body lifts. The uptravel is very limited and crucial for 80's. IMHASSumption the less uptravel the more prone to tip overs?????

Also an ARB will mos def. not clear those 40's

Looks sweet!!!!!!!!!

ALSO, fellow mudders, he does not run a rear bumper setup, ARB, winch?... that most of us have, all these things make the can explain the different results on his truck when comparing

You are right, keeping the rig lightweight has a real effect offroad, and I have gone out of my way to do just that.
And just to stir the pot, IMHO, limiting the travel (in my case with bumpstops) has made the rig MORE stable offroad. Sure it lifts wheels and does not look so spectacular, but it keeps the truck level in most cases. Sure, an EXTREME angle will tip her over, but I reckon a truck with more travel will go first!

Flame suit on and ready.....

I think it totally depends on the situation. Too flexy= flop, not flexy enough=flop. You need to find the right balance with your vehicle and the terrain that you are in the most. Personally, I agree with Rick (as a rule), I would rather have the suspension set up for droop and get my under-carage off the ground.

40's on 4" is a lot, but there is some trimming at the early contact points and it looks like he still has about 4" of up travel. On a 10" travel suspension, that is no more unbalanced than OME medium, which has 4" of down travel and 6" up - the exact same ratios but inverted. For rock crawling, I would definitely prefer the 6" down because you are leaning the body into obstacles less - very important on a rig of this size.

Very interesting options when you don't try to increase the overall suspension travel just because you are going very oversized on tires. You'd have to keep the rig light to keep from bottoming out on the road, but it does work in my testing (I originally had about 4" of up travel on my setup and had no issues onroad or heading to the trail - I am 50/50 up/down on 10" travel now).

Nay

He's headed about the same route I plan to. I'm gonna be running 14" shocks w/ roughly 5" of lift and I plan for 4-5" up and 9-10" down....very slinky like.
