Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Will try and make it, but can only do a day trip.

We could also consider the M10 option but with a loop back to Penny Pines. Take the M10 east and then the 37 trail back. There are a ton of shorter trails in the Penny Pines area to play on as well:

In this map, all of the blue are "medium" difficulty trails which should be fine for stock LC. The green are "easy" and the black are "difficult". My experience is that the blue can range from easy to medium with a handful of spots that keep things interesting, though not really technical.

The M10 is gravel and aside from any washouts and snow, should be fine in any vehicle. The 37 is a very remote and lightly traveled road. Definitely not the kind of trail to do alone this time of year. If you get in trouble, it may be June before anybody finds you 😂

Honestly, there are enough trails around Penny Pines to make a long day.

Yeah, a day run is a bit of a stretch for me. If I can make it, I would probably make a long weekend out of it. The kids want to have time to play in the snow.

As far as trails, I suspect that Hull Mountain is a no go until late spring based on previous experiences, but we can always try. The problem is that even if it warms, the north facing slopes will hold snow drifts well into the warmer months.

Also, I don't know if the plan would be to take the M10 across to Stonyford or do some kind of loop, but I am pretty sure the M10 is washed out east of Letts Lake.

I also heard that the 301 and M6 from Potters Valley have been impassable recently but this may just be temporary.

Another option is Bartlett Springs from Upper Lake over to Indian Springs. It is about 25 miles and suitable for a stock LC. That route is also likely to have heavy snow in parts, but it is a little closer.

In any case, I am happy to do whatever.

Hull mountain with snow, the last bit of road always gets a large drift on it, making it impassable.

M10 to the east of Letts is washed out still, at least it was when I was last up there.

I did hear the same about M6 from Potter Valley but haven't seen it for myself.

Here is another option, 4900 Bartlett Springs Rd to 1175 Pitney Ln - https://goo.gl/maps/FsGXbnznopvStkFGA

Make a loop out of your Bartlett suggestion and come back to Upper Lake via Twin Valleys. it would bring us back up French Ridge and past High Glade fire lookout into Upper lake.

Another option if we wanted to go through Potter Valley, and if Hull Mtn is a no go, is to carve out a loop or two from some of the lower elevation trails. There are a couple of good 4x4 trails in that area. There is the Rattlesnake 4x4 trail (ie trail 67) and Ericson Ridge 4x4 trail (ie trail 60). Combined with some of the other routes, they would make good options. There are a few loop possibilities:

Have you done #67? I remember trying to get through a trail in that area a few years back and it was too over grown.

Also fyi #65 is closed since it burned up there, it was a fun trail.

I haven't done 67 but it was closed from the ranch fire and eventually cleaned up and re-opened two years ago so I would be surprised if it was overgrown.

65 is closed south of M1 during the summer but is now open according to the NFS. It was also one of the trails that was opened two years ago.

Of course, MNF is notorious for being a little lax with public postings of closures so no matter what we decide, I think a call to the appropriate district office would be prudent. They are prone to close roads without warning this time of year if they think that the roads are at risk of damage from traffic.

Good to hear 67 and 65 was opened. But of course if you look at the MNF interactive map it says Rattlesnake is closed, so not sure if that's them being lax to update or not. I'll put a call in to the Ranger station to see if I can get an answer.

I'm open to any of the suggestions so far, what did you think the idea to do the twin valleys loop?

I can keep us posted on snow levels, I can see Pinnacle Rock, Snow Mtn and Hull Mtn from our house.

The Twin Valleys loop option looks good.

The current NOAA map shows a couple of spots with >50 inches and a lot between 30-50, but most looks around 24 inches.

How does it look out your window?

What about a day trip to Hollister on Jan 17? Holiday for most Id assume

Hollister is a bit far for me in a day.

Cant see much right now, cloudy and a few showers up here. All I can say is the snow is above 4000'. next week looks like some warmer temps so the snow will move pretty quickly.
I'll let you know what I see tomorrow if the weather lifts

I'm kind of up for Hollister tomorrow if anyone else wants to go.

@suppercarrera
What time are you thinking of going to Hollister tomorrow?
