I was 17 in 1972 and three of us kids drove from Orange County CA to Bajia de Los Angeles during Easter break in my bone stock 1971 FJ40. The only wrenching I did was on a fellow travelers Datsun. The reason he broke down was cause he didn't do any PM. He spent his $$$ on 70's stuff. (You know) I spent my money on belts, hoses and a spare fuel can. We drove the "old road" past Ensenada and had a blast.

I carried no Pesos, had no trouble with fuel or language, ate well, drank even better at 17 years old. Whats my point? Like many of the wise ones on the thread the adventure is what you make of it.

Regarding Californians, I am native but cannot stand most Bay Area people cause they are in such a frikin hurry and think their stuff doesn't smell. As for Texans well just about everyone I ever met from TexASS just raves about how great Texas is. WELL if its so great why not move back!!! And take your damn hat off when your inside. A bunch of wind bags.

In Baja, be patient, be polite, say thank you, don't speak pigin Spanish and you'll be suprised how the people respond. Rosaroto and Ensenada have Colonel Sanders and ATM's They are not third world at all. Be very careful with prescription drugs. Do not purchase without a script. The Fed's are in cahots with SOME pharmacies. DO NOT BRING GUNS.

So I hope to see some of you in Baja some day in my third 40.

Panzer- I may be able to help with parking when the time comes depending on how many "a few" is. I'm in North San Diego about 35 minutes from the airport. '06 is quite a ways away, but keep it in mind. I'm assuming SAN means Lindberg field.
Dom

Thanks Dom,
SAN is Lindberg Field and a few is looking at this point to be between 2 and 5 rigs. I may PM you when I get closer to actualization.

I thought about just going into longterm airport parking but I have some security concerns with leaving a loaded up rig undefended. The other thought was to rent a storage unit spaces.

Your right, 06 is still a long way off. 03/06 is the goal with a final go/no go date of 01 sept. 05.

Thanks again for the offer,
CAS

pappy-what are you driving down-I will be in my grey Gmc with a trailer,I will look for you

White 1985 4Runner. Possibly traveling with a dark green 4Runner and/or a white 4door Taco. I should be heading down on the 19th.

VEHICLE INSURANCE!!

I know verizon phones can be changed to operate on the Mexo protocol by yourself. They also have a special monthly (weekly) service plan for vacationers like yourself.

Also, driving at night, especially on the non-toll highway is way dangerous--no fencing, plenty cows, dogs, tractors, drunks, etc.

Bring tons of fishing hear.

Hey,
All of the above is very good advice. I have been to Baja numerous times starting in the late '70s thru the mid '90's. Haven't been in ahwile! Need to go again. A possible must do expedition would be to Punta Chivato on the east side of Baja. Fantastic beach camping, unreal wetland areas to the south, and only 1.5 hours north of Mulege. Locals are wonderful, last time I was there a local farmer would drive the beach with fresh produce and local food in the am, price for an entire days fresh veggies and tortillas, about $2.00 us. Oh yeah I am from CA, and have travelled the world and there are as many different types of people there as there are here. By the way we were parked on the side of the road and a family of locals stopped to see if we needed help, Mom, Dad and their 4 kids. never happened to me in the US. Easily the best vacations I have ever taken. Enjoy
