Back-up Light signal source in cab for reverse lights and cameras

So you are using that pin to trigger the relay to turn on those snazzy lights? That's pretty slick!

Did you also include an override so you don't blind the people across the street as you back out of your driveway in the morning? haha!

The pin provides power. The LED's are such low draw, I did not use a relay.
For an override I use a single-pole-double-throw (SPDT) switch. Up is always on - a camp light or for fun a "Baja light" in extreme dust. Center is always off. Down is reverse activated.
 
Searched for a long time and couldn't find any information for the LX450s.

I just did this on my 97 lx450. The color of the wire is different (red/black/ with silver dots) but the pin location is exactly the same!
Thanks I'm just getting ready to hook up my reverse wire from my head unit on my 97 lx450 .I'll try to remember to take and post a photo .
 
Just wanted to add to the knowledge base on this thread. The reverse signal in my '94 is in the same position but the wire is white with silver dashing. Cant wait for the backup cam!
 
can you explain how you connected/wired the switch. how does that control the power to the harness?

The common of the SPDT switch (typically center) is the wire to the lights (or a relay if high current draw). Then one switch input is the power source from the reverse lights and the other input is a 12V always hot. Make sense?

Not completely - how many wires connect to the switch? one always hot lead and the 1 power source from the reverse lights where does that come from? How do you prevent shutting off the reverse lights when you want the led spots off?

How do you prevent shutting off the reverse lights when you want the led spots off? THAT PART I DON"T UNDERSTAND YOUR QUESTION. PERHAPS THIS HELPS: FACTORY REVERSE LIGHTS CIRCUIT IS UNAFFECTED. THIS IS A OFFSHOOT, SO TO SPEAK.
 
@Inukshuk could a wire tap be used instead of pulling the pin and solder?
When I replied the other day, I had little time and did not immediately know what a "wire tap" was. Back here now after your "like" (thanks!) to say that I do not support the use of wire taps hardly ever unless there is absolutely no alternative.

For a US Spec 1993 FZJ80, a good place to tap the reverse light circuit is in the driver's side kick-panel.

I found no good photos or great description about where precisely to find this back-up light signal source in cab for reverse lights (my project) and backup cameras (many others asked). (Many words added here to aid search.) :cheers:

Once I found the connector, it was easy to find the wire and connect it to my switch. I'm using a single pole double throw (SPDT) switch so my roof rack rear facing lights can be on with Reverse, off, or on (for camp setup or area light).


Photo one: Tip of screwdriver shows pin on male connector.
Photo two: closeup (I highlighted the pin in black). Wire out the back of the male connector is red with black stripe.
Photo three: This is the female side after pin removed. I added a black mark. In my hand is the modified pin.

Hi! Firstly, thank you for this helpful post - it has really help guide me through my radio/rear camera install. Question for you - how do you de-pin this connector? I am having a heck of a time trying to get this out (sidenote: I've never actually de-pinned a connector before so I'm trying the tips I've seen on youtube)

Well, there's a step-by-step in here somewhere...

I use the 2.4mm flat blade screwdriver from my Stanley "Precision" screwdriver set.
