How in the name of all that is holy are you supposed to re-assemble the back door outer handle and latch mechanism?

I had taken out the door latch that engages the striker on the body and then took off the outer door handle, and when I went to put them together again - WTF?

The back bolt on the outer door handle for the back door is SO close the edge of the door that it is a PITA to screw in, but then getting the latch mechanism in behind that back bolt is unbelievable!

I had to clock the actual bolt so a flat was straight up and down in the 9 o'clock position, and only then could I get the DS latch to slide in.

I couldn't get the PS latch in behind the rear bolt head no matter what I did so I fianally said "F this" and took the bolt head and latch to bench grinder so they could clear each other.

I notice my FSM for '78 doesn't even address the rear door latch mechanism for Piggies.

Anyone go through this unique torture, or are you all smart enough to just not take that s*** apart?

was it that hard to get apart?

I don't recall ever taking one apart that far.

Well, you are a smarter man then me!

I do not recommend it...

It wasn't fun taking it apart, kind of awkward reaching back in there.

I have taken apart a few tailgates. I even put one together once, but it was long ago and I'm having trouble envisioning just what your problem is....
I'm not going to take one apart to see what you see; so, pics or figure it out yourself.
I do agree that the tailgate is the worst part of a Pig to work on, and I find that it sometimes is worth it to hire a young Japanese girl (or boy if you refer) for an hour. They have the tiny hands.

Not tailgate, rear door for back seat.
I made it through the tailgate, and yeah, it was a PITA as well

Oh...never mind.
